View Full Version : Alternative To Brown Sugar?

I found a really good Applesauce Oatmeal Cookie recipe to make but it calls for 3/4 cup of brown sugar. I'd kind of like to take all processed sugars out of this recipe so that I can make it as a breakfast cookie for the kids during school (kind of a healthy fun alternative to the usual stuff).
Does anyone know of any natural alternatives to brown sugar that I can use in it's place?
Thank you in advance.

I use honey but they will be "flatter" and stickier. You could use straight molasses but it would change the flavor some. 'Course so does honey.

I use sucanat in place of brown sugar. You could also use turbinado sugar.

Thank you very much for the ideas.
Where would I get sucanat and turbinado sugar? I've never even heard of these.
How does molasses change the taste? Does it make it sweeter or what? I've never tried molasses so that's why I ask.

You can get these at the hfs. Sucanat is much less refined as turbinado sugar. T. sugar is the last step before refining, so it's pretty bad. But, sucanat is the first step in making sugar, so much less refined.

You've never had molasses?! sheesh! lol! It has a pretty strong flavor... um... like REAL dark brown sugar. You could use mostly honey, then some molasses to get that flavor.
