Jacob is at the age where most children are about to head off to Kindergarten. We know a lot of children his age - some homeschool, but most don't. The conversation these days seems to be all about the first day of Kindergarten. It made me start to think a little about what we might do on that day.

Normally we are on vacation at the Outer Banks, but I'm not sure if that's going to happen this year. I'd like to go somewhere, like a local beach or museum, that will be blissfully uncrowded because everyone has gone back to school.

Do you do anything special on the traditional first day of school each year? We are continuing 'school' work through the summer, so we won't have a day when we suddenly start learning again. We'll probably be finishing up our unit on Ancient Greece around that time. Jacob has finished work that is generally associated with Kindergarten - he's been reading for a couple of years and is way 'ahead' (I hate that word, how can he be ahead when he's following his own course?) in Math, so he's not really a Kindergartener, he's just at that age.

I just wondered if you have anything special you do for the traditional first day of school? My children don't seem to feel left out with all the talk and commercials and ads, etc, but I thought it might be fun to do some special things on that day.

With my first dd, I took her 'school shopping' for crayons, paper, etc.

On the first day of 'school', I took her picture and we had a little party to celebrate at home.
(She wore her best dress of course!)
She also used to like to put on her backpack and march around the yard before she came in for 'school' :joker:
