Hello,
I feel so bad getting rid of things that were given to me---especially from family.
Does anyone else have a problem with this?

used to but then you have to look at it this way. You are the one that has to look at and dust, and in my case move it. etc.... It is soooooo not worth it. If you don't like it, it is perfectly acceptable to get rid of it. And on the reverse side of that I have learned to go to someones house and not worry about what I have given them. Or what they have done with it.
My SIL doesn't like battery operated toys, and I didn't know so the first year I knew her I got her daughter a bear that reads stories. It went back to the store, but I was okay with that because I respect her wishes.
They gave it to you. It is yours you can do what ever you want with it!!!!

Once you write a gracious thank you note you should feel free to do anything you like with the gift. The gift is not the person or their relationship with you. If the item isn't enriching your life or making you feel happy when you look at it/use it/wear it then give it to a friend who will enjoy it or donate it to a charitable thrift store. Or of course, post it on the Market board here. lol
