View Full Version : Did you ever wonder what you should do if you find a fallen nest of baby birds?

I was left wondering that today.
Dh is replacing the gutters/soffit/fascia and when he removed a section of gutters a nest with 5 tiny, featherless, pink baby birds fell to the ground.
So I googled what to do (gotta love google!).
I got the colander out of the kitchen, lined it with some nesting material, slid the nest and babies into it, and dh screwed it to a tree that was very near the gutters. The whole time there was a frantic mama bird pacing the next door neighbor's yard. As soon as we cleared the area the mama went to her babies.
I finally solved the "what do you do with the plastic colander that is perfectly good when you've de-plasticed the kitchen" dilemma. :p
BTW, it's a rosy pink colander...from back in the days of rose and blue...late 80s. Now I finally get to go buy a nice metal colander...guilt free. LOL!
oh wow I would have no idea and google would not have occured to me! clever clever mama!

Yay!
I have killed many a bird trying to save them. I am so glad I now have an idea if I need to help them again.
Thanx for saving the birds Danielle :)

Now, see, that is why I posted. My first thought was that I need to save them. Those old wives tales about how mama birds will not care for a baby that's been touched by humans running through my mind....
I've been a googling freak trying to figure out how to care for this turtle and care for her injuries. So google was the first place I went.
As it turns out birds have a cruddy sense of smell and are very caring parents...they will not abandon their babies because they've moved or touched.
I'm so glad I am not feeding mushed worms to 5 babies with an eye dropper AND taking care of an injured turtle.

LOL...I can't tell you how many times that's happened to me in the last week with this turtle! After finally figuring out that the types of turtles we have locally are the kinds that are sold as pets I'm assuming that is why there is no help available for injured turtles. :( I have called and emailed tons of people (got ONE response...very helpful and I'm totally appreciative!) and *if* I actually get ahold of someone they treat me like I'm the biggest nutcase. I still feel like if this turtle lives it will have way more to do with divine intervention than anything I'm doing.
I'm REALLY glad I'm not starting over on the same path with 5 baby birds!!!
Yup,.. Even if I call on a dog they act like they are wondering why I would call them?!?!
Just makes me wonder why they take the job in the first place??
Now I have a connection there but before I wouldn't even bother!
Oh and you should have heard them when I called about a wild peacock in our back yard!! LOL!!! *WE* had to catch the mean old thing and bring it in! that was fun! :joker:

something similar happened to us last week. DH was "cutting the hole" to build our house in and there was an old dead tree right in the middle of where our house would go. That tree had a nest full of baby birds.
We were believing the old tale about touching the nest, so we actually ended up taking a saw to the tree (it was dead anyway) at the base, my FIL, DH, and I carried the tree to a fence post and tied it to the post! It worked! The mama bird yelled at us for a while, but went right to her babies. They are still there!
I love checking on them every day. She's gotten used to me and actually lets me get to about 1 foot away from her. She watches very closely though!
