View Full Version : How to get rid of tree stumps

DH has a heck of time. Cutting them is rough on the chain saw. Pulling them out is even worse. I read about that stuff you pour in. That just cuts down the decomposing time. Which could be 5-10 years normally.
We are getting small maples springing up to the next the old stumps that were cut down. That is good.

If you have a few to do, maybe you could rent a stump grinder? I would go that route before I would dump chemicals into a stump.
Our neighbor did the chemical thing on a maple stump maybe 3 years ago, and it's still there. It's not putting up suckers, however.

You can speed the process along by covering the stump with organic materials like leaves, etc. Once the stump starts to decompose, you can plant pumpkin, squash, etc in it to continue helping the process along. Not the fastest route however. Dawn
An old timer told us to drill "enough" holes, fairly deep in the stump, then pour sorghum or molasses in the holes. He claims this seeps into the tree and ants and the like will decompose the stump to get to the sweet stuff. He claimed this is the best way to get a stump out of a fence it has grown into. He also said a stump that is fence high will be gone within a year. We have only just now done it, but I figure it at least makes sense and certainly isn't hurting anything.

I heard how to this a long time ago on a gardening radio show. Try searching this site (http://www.inthegardenradio.com/) for the directions.

That molasses and drilled holes sounds like it would really work.
Whatever you do, don't try to build a campfire around it and burn it. I know so many people that think that will work and try it in desperation only to end up with a 2 ton hunk of charcoal in their yard.
