You would think after nursing six kids I would know! However, I have never experienced what I have right now....
One breast hurts on the side, near the nipple, about a 2 inch radius. It really hurts when my milk lets down or if I raise that arm. There is no lump, no swelling, no redness, no heat, no engorgement, all that I usually feel with the past mastitis I have had (all treated with just nursing baby more). This is the third day that it has hurt, though it feels like it is getting somewhat better. It is still very uncomfortable to carry Nick on that side. Is just a painful spot in the breast a sign of mastitis?
TIA!!!
Oh and baby is 10 months old tomorrow, exclusively breastfed, and has not missed any nursings.

It sounds like an infected milk gland. Just do everything you usually would with mastitis, heat on the site, drink lots of fluids, and nurse on that side a lot!
I hope it goes away soon!

Just my opinion, but I think after 3 days you would have flu like symptoms by now if it was mastitis. I would think maybe a plugged milk duct. Apply warm compress, stand in a warm shower, then get the baby to nurse, to try to suck the plug out. It won't hurt him. If you can resolve it, you could stop it from becoming mastitis. Let me know if this is at all helpful, or if you need to feel free to pm me.

Good luck Mama!
