I started making some bendy dolls using the instructions from the FAQ.

I have some questions though.

How do you do hair for boy bendys?

How do you attach the hair?

What materials do you use for wings if your making fairies?

How big are your bendy dolls usually (even if you make different sizes)?

What kind of thread/yarn, etc do you use for hair?

What finishing details do you like to put on your dolls?

I'm making some for my son. I have almost finished 3 (they need hair) and he keeps trying to steal them from me, LOL.

For hair I've seen people use embroidery floss, wool, felt...pearl cotton (sold by the embr. floss but it's thicker and in bigger hanks) is my material of choice.

For boy hair I usually lay many strands parallel and tie in the center. I put glue in the bead's hole on top of the head and poke the tied center of the bundle into the hole. Then I put glue on the head and spread the hair around.

For wings I've used silk flower petals and leaves (sew on) or feathers (glue on).

I've made them as tiny as 1/2" (just a piece of one pipe cleaner) and as big as about 4 1/2" (2 pipe cleaners...one for arms and one for legs)

I like making "character" bendies so I can go all out with details...princesses with crowns and seed bead jewels...woodland folk with acorn cap hats...

here are my first bendy dolls. The blue one in the middle was the first I made, then the green one, then the red/orange one. The 2 boy dolls are waiting for hair, LOL. My son won't leave them alone though. He kept playing with them before I had the heads glued on, I had to sneak them away just to glue them on.

Here's the one for bendy fairies (which is what I used for inspiration/directions)

Here's one for a bendy mermaid

http://www.amitymama.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=134254

(that will be my next project after I get a few more regular bendy's and fairies done).

I'm planning on making some of these for gifts this year.

It was actually under Craft Along in the FAQ section.

I use artificial flower petals for wings on my fairies an elves. I use wool fleece as hair.. adding glue and then laying it across the fairy's head and actually wrapping a few long strands around and around the elves head.. then gluing on an acorn cap.

here's a few pics

Someone should have warned me that these things were addicting. I went out and bought some more floss and some artificial flowers last night. I'd love some wool felt though.

I've made 2-3 more. And have several in different phases of completion.

I really like the look of using the artificial flowers.

I just can't get over the fact that my son likes to play with them, LOL. I was really going to make them for gifts to some of the little girls on my Christmas list this year.

I need to figure out how to make pirates and maybe some uniformed people for him. Maybe some knights or royalty. Or maybe I just need to save that for some doll house dolls. I can't decide, LOL. Dh and I plan on making the boys a set of playstands and a doll house (but we can't decide on a regular doll house or a tree house) for Christmas. And my grandmother is getting her brother to make the boys a play barn for Christmas too. She's excited because we told them we didn't want alot of store bought toys, hehehe.

Thanks everyone for the help.

How do you attach the petal wings to the back of the fairies? Can someone post a pic?

Yes they are very addicting lol.. I had made a few using on-line directions then bought a book with instructions and some inspiring photos.. I'm a true bendy doll junkie now :D

I attach the wings by simply making a few stitches using needle/thread. I usually have to cut the wings down a bit if I can't find the exact size that I'm wanting.. I lay the wing where I want it to go. I take my needle.. starting underneath her sweater and bring it up through the felt and the wing. I try to get the needle close to the bottom edge of the wing. I then do a few stitches there.. going back under.. through the wing and felt and then back up again .. just 2 stitches usually in the same place.. then after I go back down with the 2nd stitch I move my needle up to the upper edge of the wing and bring it up through the felt and wing... do another double stitch there and take my needle back down through wing and felt and then I work my needle underneath to the opposite side and back up through felt and and other wing .. I do the same thing there and then go back down under wing and felt and then knot my thread. Voila!

I can post a pic tomorrow.. you might need to remind me .. if you still want a visual..

or better yet.. someone may have a better, easier way of attaching them. I tend to do things a certain way for a long time and then figure out there was a much simpler way of doing it lol

I'd still love a pic of the back of a fairy when you have a chance (no hurry, LOL)
