Just thought I'd add my two cents. :D I'm not going to say you get what you pay for... because that isn't *always* true. ;) You may get a special deal with a great logo designer and get an awesome price, but definitely ask for samples and check into things before you hire someone. Some talented mamas who are just starting out charge less, too. But if you see logo design for $5, I'd be a bit cautious, knowing the time involved in good logo design. Either the mama is seriously underpricing her time... or... well, anyway. :)

The price TOTALLY depends on the type of logo you're looking at. For something made with clipart or graphics you provide, your price is going to be much lower. For a nice, high quality clip art logo you're probably looking at $30 or there-abouts.

But for a custom-made, hand-drawn (or mouse-drawn) logo it's going to be higher. It might seem like a lot of money to pay $50 or $100 or more for a custom logo, but it's really not.

I don't generally do the fancy custom logos, it's rare that I can be talked into even attempting it, LOL (Hey Anise... this is where we call you :D ) but the mouse-drawn logos I've worked on have seriously taken 4 or more hours by the time we're done. And if the client asks for revisions, changes his/her mind many times in the course of the project, then you're looking at even MORE time invested - this doesn't include the many emails back and forth or phone calls to get a good feel for what's wanted, etc. Last time I did one, I made about $6/hour and that's not taking into consideration what happens when I pay taxes and self-employment taxes, and all that great stuff. :p We honestly don't get rich doing it. ;)

I'm not saying it takes every designer that long. ;) I can't imagine it does. *lol* This is one reason you don't see me offering custom logo design (give me clipart and I can work with it). :D But ykwim, right? A logo should NOT be whipped up in 10 minutes, imo, if it's going to be the first impression people have of your products/website/etc.

I think it is VERY worth it to pay $100 or more for a custom logo by a good artist. Their time is worth something. :) You've got a graphic that uniquely idenitfies your company, kwim? You don't have to pay royalties and can use it 1,000 times if you want on labels, packaging, invoices, your website, brochures, etc.

Just to give you an idea, I create all my logos from scratch. I do this because I want all my logos to be useable in both web and print media, which means the logo needs to be high resolution and it needs to be scaleable. So I begin all my logos in a vector-based program and save one version of the image in this fairly simple, clean-lines form, and then create the painted, fancier version in ap ainting program. This second image is high resolution, but not scaleable. So I always end up creating the image twice. (The exception is when the client really wants what I call web art and not a logo. Most people get the terms confused. With web art I usually skip the first step and the final image is not upwardly scaleable, so I just create a really huge image so it can be scaled down, just no up.

I charge $125.00 for my logos, and I've done web art for as much as $250. It takes a lot of time and patience, and it takes the proper software and skill. (And we all know good software isn't cheap). So yeah, if you're looking for a high quality logo or graphic, you're talking about more than chump change.
