Really--I have no clue. Can someone explain this to me?

Thanks!

There is a law in Judaism that states that the word God cannot be destroyed. Therefore, to write it down makes it *possible* that some time in the future, that word might be destroyed. Thus, the prohibition is actually against destroying the word. But the way to ensure that that doens't happen is not to write it down in the frist place.

There are actual severa instnaces of this in Judaism (though of course this is the only one I an think of off the top) where the prohibition is against Concept B, but Jews will implent "safeguards" to ensure it doesn't happen.

This is, by the way, the relatively short answer. I'm sure one of our true Jewish mamas can give a better answer :)

Edited to add: Desertmoon came up with another one. She said, "Nowhere in the Torah does it say not to mix meat and milk." but because of the prohbition against cookig a calf in its mother's milk, if you don't mix meat and milk *at all*, then you won't run into this probably accientally. Just like the not writing God thing :)

Err...

I *think* what you're talking about is vowels in the Hebrew language. And its true, they have some kinda weird system of doing vowels. I remember reading somewhere that except in the most holiest occassions, Jews are not supposed to say the name YHWH when written in the scriptures, and in order to remind Jews not to pronounce the word, the vowel sounds that corresponded with the word "Adonai" were written beneath YHWH (because they were supposed to say "Adonai" instead of YHWH) Many scholars have speculated that this is the reason that YHWH came to be pronounced "Yahweh"--a combination of YHWH and the vowel sounds that go with the word "Adonai"

A long time ago I studied that and if I remember correctly it has to do with the holiness of God. Just to write out G-O-D would be irreverent, therefore people would leave the "O" out and write G-D. I had understood that to be inherantly Jewish.

My understanding on that could be wrong though and it's been a very long time since I "looked" into it.

I was raised in an orthodox jewish environment and until recent years I never wrote the word G-d without missing the vowel...the reason? Respect, holiness and awe. To write or even say the true name was indeed forbidden, hence the many different names the Jews have for HIM!
