My dd goes to school but we leave in a not so good town there is no good schools here at all. She is almost 8 and is in first grade but has been tested and is above second grade level. We school her at home also and I would like some good books for 2nd and 3rd grade. I don't even know where to start. Im having a Usborne party on the 25th of this month and saw they had some home school books but what should I get? I would love to maybe buy some here also. She loves everything. She is in the 95 percentile in the state for a second grader and she is in the first grade due to being in NC she missed the cut of date by 6 days, urggg. She should have been in the second grade now. So any good books for sale and recmendations for the Usborne home school books would be great. Angie Potter

Do you have The Well Trained Mind? It has lots of great suggestions for supplementing (not just for homeschooling).

Well Trained Mind isn't an Usborne book. Look at your library to see if you can borrow a copy. However - there is a new edition out (last month) and a lot of the recommendations have been revised.
Books I got for use with my 1st and 3rd grade sons from my Usborne party are:
*Internet Linked Encyclopedia of the World
*First Encyclopedia series (I got 8 titles - my younger oens enjoy looking at these, too - but they have enuogh information for elem aged kids to read themselves)
*Encyclopedia of Planet Earth
*Book of Astronomy and Space
*Book of Castles
*Dinosaur Sticker Atlas

You probably found an Usborne consultant's site. Some Usborne consultants also sell other books from different publishers. like a bookstore would.
Well Trained Mind is published by Peace Hill Press, not Usborne.

Scroll down in the Alternative Learning Forum (this one) and find the post about getting TWTM (The well trained mind) for $20. Click on the mentioned link. If the bookstore still says out of stock (what it said when I went there), contact them and they'll put one aside for you. They take paypal. It is the newest edition (I just love it!). The cover was a little scuffed but shipping does that to books :(
Heather, I am totally thinking of using the Handwriting without tears instead of the ZB one they recommend. Christine is not ready for it yet but when she is. I like it better. What did/are you using for language/grammer beyond the 1st/2nd grade? I was thinking Rod and Staff. Obviously I have a ways to go. (If you have read prior posts of mine, you already know I was schooled in Abeka for everything; hated their math but I did love the language series). Thanks, Heather.

Austin is going to be 3rd grade. (I hate even assigning a numbered grade to him... it's so not a total picture, kwim?) This summer I am quickly going through First Language Lessons and have him memorize some things. He is learning quite a lot of the grammar skills in K12 LA - but next year we aren't re-enrolling, so I need something that will pick up where that leaves off. He is being exposed to all the same things that are in FLL. So basically, we'll be starting from the end of FLL.
I was able to look at a copy of Primary Language Lessons and Intermediate Language Lessons - both by Emma Serl. The Primary Language Lessons covered a lot of what we already covered, so we are moving on to Intermediate Language Lessons. Austin hates to write, and likes more one on one conversation type teaching - and this is how PLL&ILL work... just like FLL.
We really like HWT and will continue it. I might even get the preschool set for Adam to start this next year, too.
