Does anyone know of any non-toxic/natural drain cleaner or clog remover? Store bought or something you can make yourself?

(I've been losing hair like crazy lately and it keeps clogging our tub drain. I really don't want to keep using the toxic stuff.)

TIA

I have been using vinegar and baking soda. I don't measure, so I just pour some baking soda in the drain and follow up with vinegar until I get the "volacano" effect:D

Works great so far:thumbsup:

you can also go to the hardware store where they sell enzymes that you put down the drain. They eat up all the sludge in the pipes for you. This was recomended by the repair man who just came out to snake my washers drain (backed up into the kitchen sink). It does not harm your pipes the way that drano can.

Even better.......prevent the clog!!

You can buy a plastic mesh thing that sits inside the drain & catches the hair before it goes down!! I suppose even some type of loose netting would do the same thing. Also watch to not let the last pieces of soap go down the drain as they can gather up the hair & cause faster clogging.

I've also used baking soda & then I heat up the vinegar & pour it down, it seems to work better. I use it when our kitchen sink drains slowly.

As for preventing it in the first place...I wanted to put one of those strainers in the drain, but the way ours is set up is awful. It is the type of drain that you flip a lever to make it go up and down and the stopper part does not come out without disassembling the whole thing. We did some upgrades to the bathroom two years ago, but to change the type of drain plug was going to involve going into the wall and disassembling it and I didn't want to get into that.

Thanks for all the suggestions though!

I'll second the baking soda and vinegar treatment - after it stops reacting, follow it with a large amount of boiling water (a teapot full or more.) It works!

use a shop vac to suck it out. works here. dh used to poke a wire coathanger down it and pull it out, but the shop vac is lots easier and less messy...

Actually, when I lived with miki's mama, her hair always was clogging our drain. Nothing worked, enzymes, drano, vinegar. I just weekly would take a pinch of the hair, and pull, grabbing more and more as it came out thicker and thicker. I gagged, but after a few weeks of realizing it worked better than anything, and was quite easy actually (took about 30 seconds, even though only a few strands of hair showed at the drain, it was all connected in about a 2 ft long clog), I got over it. It was mostly all the slimy soap scum and stuff that bothered me. After the surprise wore off, it became easy.

So if all else fails, try pulling - or if you have a strong stomach you could even try it first. :)
