The kids and I were reading about the American Flag and the Pledge of Allegiance, and I was telling the kids about it, but they don't have it memorized like I do from when I was a kid. I was just wondering if anyone else had their kids memorize it and/or say it regularily.

I do. Patriotism and respect for country is something that's important to me personally, and I'm trying to pass that on to Caroline. IMHO saying the Pledge and learning the National Anthem are part of that, so she knows both. She's a hoot at baseball games, where she sings at the top of her lungs. LOL

my kids know it, too. :-)

And Austin sings the national anthem ALL THE TIME! And he tries to sing it with vibrato.... he heard me practicing for a change of command a couple of years ago, so now he thinks he needs to sing it like a woman.

Also... I have taught my children that it is disrepectful to the National Anthem to clap afterwards. The clapping started when it started being sung at baseball games and people started clapping because the game was starting. Before long, people clapped after the National Anthem everywhere. You are NOT supposed to clap after the Nat'l Anthem! (ok, stepping down)

Yes, we "teach" it but we also discuss the history of the "under god" and all of the hoopla around it. They are/have learned the pre 1954 version.

My kids have learned all about it and what it means. We say the Pledge every morning in our devotional.

I will be. I think patriotism is important. Plus, I have heard so many well-informed (IMO) talk radio hosts state that we live in a democracy. We don't. We live in a republic ~ ...and to the REPUBLIC, for which it stands..... Just a pet peeve around here. ;)
