I just finished a huge, whopping dye batch! My hands are ugly, my knees hurt, my hands are sore, AND, I didn't even make anything for ME! Bummer! Plus, I did it all by myself (well, with a 4 year old helping LOL).
First, I did a bunch of different low water immersion dye baths:
http://www.amitymama.com/vb/attachment.php?s=&postid=767162
Then I tie dyed a bunch of socks. If I NEVER do another sock in my life, it will be too soon!! UGH
Here is a shot of most of it:
http://www.amitymama.com/vb/attachment.php?s=&postid=767165
2 scarves
30 pairs of socks (that's 60 of those buggers!)
16 pairs of undies
4 shirts
6 snap crotch shirts
1 Large men's shirt
AND one nasty pair of hands!
Here is Hadyn in her matching lavender undies and socks:

More in next post.............

Here is a close up of all the socks and undies:

Here are the shirts:
http://www.amitymama.com/vb/attachment.php?s=&postid=767172
AND, finally, the really cool shirt I made dh. I love the way it turned out. It has great color contrast. I used a mix of bronze and yucca. I think he'll actually wear this one! LOL BTW, he's "modeling". Good thing he's good at his day job!!!

All I can say is WOW! and I never should've opened this post with Duncan next to me because the first thing he said was "Mama, can you dye my underwear???"

The mirror in my bathroom says:
Simplicitas Formam Est
It's Latin for :Simplicity is Beauty (beauty of form) I translated it and painted it last year. It was meant to inspire me. Of coure, it's been a bazillion years since I've done latin, so it could be very poorly translated. But, I tried! LOL

I used Dharma's procion Yucca and Bronze colors. I just did it LWI style with both colors dumped on top one after the other. Let sit for about 1 hour, add the soda ash, sit another hour and rinse. I have found that the secret to good color variation is in the scrunching. I try to make sure I scrunch it really tight and in a single layer only.
I followed these instructions:
http://www.pburch.net/dyeing/lowwaterimmersion.shtml
Selena also has some great directions with picts:

I love you dh's shirt (yaI know me and everybody else) mostly I love that there are no white spots. What do you mean by "single layer only"? Like a long flat dying vat so the entire item is able to fit without doubling over in any area?....you know my absolute pet peeve with LWI is the darn white spots...Allison says I am anal LOL....what can I say I don't like white spots!!
I can't let my girls see this thread...
I just can't put myself through dying undies...socks are bad enough!! LOL Great Job mama :)

I almost never get white spots. Hmmm, I wonder what I'm doing different. Maybe it's in the way I'm scrunching and packing the fabric. Too bad you don't live closer, or we could have a dye party.

I never double the fabric over its self. I lay the fabric out flat, do as many scrunches as I can in the most random manner. Then, I stuff it in the container w/o any of the fabric tucking under any other fabric. I also poke any puffy bits back in. Maybe I've been lucky, but really, I've only had one item get white spots, and I think it's just that specific item, as it's done it twice (it was a large cotton scarf). HTH

I have seen some wonderful picture of PRR that has been dyed...how do I do that? I'm assuming it's more than just going out and buying some RIT. I looked on the dharma site but am still a bit confused. Who can help me?

No, don't use RIT on PRR unless you want to dye all of the fabric including the little designs. Fiber Procion dyes are the ones to use -- also called fiber reative. They react to the fabric only, not the design. You can get them at Dharma (http://www.dharmatrading.com/html/eng/3796-AA.shtml) where you can also get playsilks and clothing blanks to dye at a good price. Sometimes you can also find them at JoAnn or Michael's in the tie-dye section, in sets of colors.
I get mine (and the soda ash) at a local knitting shop.
I compiled an article here:

What are your not-to-live-without colors? :D
lovebugsmama
03-26-2004, 11:00 PM
I LOVE:
Cerulean Blue
Orchid
Yucca
Hadyn loves:
Orchid
Lavender
I like:
Bronze
Burgundy
I just bought some chartreuse and can't wait to try it.
I want to try:
Robin's Egg Blue
Wedgewood blue
Periwinkle
Did not like:
Lapis blue - it comes out purple!
Don't use Burgundy on boy things, it's a bit pink-ish
Chinese Red - not **RED** enough

03-26-2004, 11:07 PM
lol :sorry:
I've just spent the day tub dying so I'm almost in need of more
I definitly need more salt but they don't carry it at CC and I forget to look at S&F.
More Soda Ash but I foget to even think about finding it locally.
I'll never buy Forest Green again. It looked yucky.
Ditto on Better Black. Couldn't get blacky black.
I don't have a Gotta Have List because I have yet to find colors that I love. I'm sure my problem is that I'm to frugal to use the amount of dye needed to get the intensity of the colors that I'd really like kwim?
arasmama
03-26-2004, 11:15 PM
I've never found a red red or a black black. To get black, I've always dyed it twice (which is why I don't attempt black anymore).
I love cereluan, fire red, lemon yellow, olive drab, and better black. You can get anything from those. I'm a mixer though. I don't like buying the premixed (except olive). My favorite part of dyeing is the experimenting.
Oh, Timmi and I also enjoyed playing with blue gray.

Caymen Isle Green
Alpine Blue
& I'm having lots of fun with Raspberry right now

marigold, aquamarine, lilac, light red and grape. Don't waste your money on coral pink. It looks like sunburned salmon. It's hideous. Oh, and brilliant blue is a crappy mixing blue.
Pixie's~Mama
03-26-2004, 11:40 PM
Ditto what Allison said, I'm a mixer, too. :D
I do love these on their very little own though:
*Robin's Egg Blue
*Marigold (Deep Yellow is nice, too) ~ this is a great mixing color as well.
*Ice Blue is so pretty; it's a light blue that lends to periwinkle. Love it!
Great mixing colors:
*Seafoam
*Kelly green
*olive drab
choleblack
03-27-2004, 12:27 AM
I mix from lemon yellow, turquoise & fire red.
I like having grape around 'cause I'm never happy with my mixed purple.
I like midnight blue on silk, but not cotton (always to dark). Same goes for forest green.
Better black for painting on cotton, Jet black acid dye for silk.
DD wants all her clothes dyed with baby pink. Dh has a closet full of work shirts done with khaki (covers dingy white very nicely) & a baseball hat I did in the color he calls "apple green" that I mixed.

Now see I *like* Brilliant Blue. But I haven't used it for mixing. I love how it comes out on it's own, though. I'll second Grape. I used that one this morning for the first time, and I like what I got with a small bit of it, and I'm looking forward to seeing what I get with a whole bunch of it, lol. And I think Forest green makes a lovely sage when you use 2 tsp to dye a huge chunk of super wide flannel to make queen sheets, lol. :D
Suzanne just got impressive results with Fire Red. I have been too chicken to try mine, but seeing her dye job last week has me thinking I can do red, too.
