My DS has outgrown what he calls "baby" books. I think he is ready to listen to more involved chapter books. He is a "boy." He loves dinosaurs, pirates, monsters, and lots of action.
Any suggestions for books to read to him? We have read some Magic Treehouse books which he enjoyed.
TIA

Unfortunately, I am no use here. My oldest ds is interested in reading more, too, but his interests lie with the Captain Underpants series. :::sigh:::

Do you know the Magic Treehouse series? Good books that my children really like, on lots of different topics. Something for everyone!
My almost 5 year old also likes the Henry and Mudge books.

Oh, it's been a long time since I chose books for a 5 year old! I remember my older boys really enjoying My Father's Dragon by Ruth Stiles-Gannett. It is actually a trilogy, with Dragons of Blueland and Elmer and the Dragon.
How about James and the Giant Peach** or Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl?
That's all I can think of off the top of my head. I will try to think of more--maybe I'll go browse my 16 yo son's bookcase (he has saved all of his favorite childhood books!)
**Edited to add--You will probably want to pre-read this one and decide if your DS is ready to hear it. It is a thoroughly delightful story, full of great adventure, but James' aunts are really wicked and treat him dreadfully. I remember being surprised by it when I re-read it as an adult**
Also I remember DS #2 loving the story of Balto the dog. A true story of a sled dog who saved the village of Nome, Alaska from diptheria by getting through a blizzard to deliver medicine. I don't remember which book it was specifically, I just know that he LOVED the story.

Not a chapter book, but: Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel by Virginia Lee Burton. A great book - my ds (5 1/2) sleeps with it if I let him! Books by E. B. White: Stuart Little, the Trumpeter Swan, Charlotte's Web

We use Sonlight curriculum for homeschooling, a literature based program. I'd suggest you go online and check out their read-aloud list for their K program. Threre were tons of great chaper books that Bryce loved at 5. (My Fathers Dragon included) :D

A few more suggestions--Little House on the Praire series by Laura Ingalls Wilder. And books by Beverly Cleary--The Mouse and the Motorcycle series and the Ramona books and Henry Huggins.
There are also some more sophistocated picture books out there. Try some of the books by Chris Van Allsburg--there are so many wonderful ones! We particularly loved The Widow's Broom and Two Bad Ants ;)
