Wow, what a pile. One of the worst movies I've seen all year. I want to give it a Razzie. It should actually be retitled "The Directing Gene was Lost in Conception," b/c although I've really really tried to give old Sofia the benefit of the doubt, she doesn't hold a candle to her dad, or her ex-husband for that matter (Being John Malkovich was leagues better).

I didn't love it but didn't think it was the pits.

It was sort of 'a slice of life" movie where you experience someone else's life for a few days.

I had trouble understanding a lot of the dialog....but that was purposefull and part of the major theme.

I also thought the male character lead was really convincing as someone living their life with great imperfections.

I respect your take on it though.

i thought it was great :) really.. i thought it was about making a conscious decision to take a direction with ones life. Things always do look better "on the other side of the fence", but the characters chose to keep a precious friendship, rather than crossing that line. I have abslutely been that girl.. maybe that is why I liked it (not since I have been married or anything, but I have had a very special relationship with a much older man-- we were at the same place in life at the same time, much as they are... and also chose to keep the friendship. He is still someone very dear to me.

anyway, i havent eaten in abt 12 hrs, so I am probably babbling-- I will come and edit later probably, lol -- off to eat now

My dh felt loved it, and I could have taken it or left it. I didn't hate it... really liked parts actually, and truly respected Bill Murreys acting in this one... was REALLY well done in that. The editing was ok... but the plot was lacking something I just could not get over the lack of IMO...

Love Val Yes, like direction. I had no sense of feeling for either character, no sense of who they were really, except that the young woman was looking to "find herself." (I did "Ikebani" and went to a temple and didn't feel anything!--WTF is wrong with her? I can tell you--you have everything you want and therefore find it difficult to appreciate the small things--go live in rural India for a week). Actually I think the movie was a biopic of Sofia Coppola, since it seems to mirror her life and time that she spent in Japan.

Hope that wasn't too harsh of an indictment. I think it would make a terrific film for travel agencies though! "visit Japan, see all the neat stuff we have here!"

I was prepared to like this movie - even though I didn't care for The Virgin Suicides (except the soundtrack) - because of the faith I have in Bill Murray to make everything right with the world, and the fact that it had gotten such extremely positive attention. Virtually no one has stepped up and said what you have, Louise, that it lacks on all levels, except maybe cinematography as it is very nice looking. And Bill Murray does a wicked good Bryan Ferry.

But you know what is good? American Splendor. At least it approximates real life, in a fantastical comic book sort of way.

It really really bored me.

We've been to Japan and are foreigners living abroad so thought a film about two different cultures meeting would be interesting.... nope, boy it dragged. In the end, I didn't care what the two main characters did or didn't do.
