THis is my first Sew-a-long. I tried to be simple and clear but if you have a question please ask and I'll try to help!

Supplies

Your favorite side seam shorts pattern. I used KSfT 2T
Elastic
Trim if so desired

Step one

Cut out your shorts like normal (2 front 2 back pieces)

Step two

sew both front pieces together at center ("J") seam. Do the same with the back pieces.

Step three

Lay front flat and measure it's width. This determines how big you will cut the front skirt panel.Mine was 12"

*If you want a back skirt you can do the above step with the back to determine the size of the back skirt panel*

Step four

Cut your skirt panel(s) according to your measurement(s) in step 3

Step five

Sew the shorts front and back together at the inseam and hem the legs and the skirt panel(s)

*Please ignore the vent on the bottom of my skirt panel. I had intended to have the skirt longer than the shorts but it looked funny when I was finished so I hemmed it even with the shorts.*

Step six

Put the skirt panel, right side to the right side of the shorts back, between the shorts pieces. Sew the side seams. Add the elastic and trim if desired. Voila A skort!

Since you had it on your little one, did you notice any restrictions in her movement? I was thinking with the skirt panel attached all the way down the side seams, it would prevent them from being able to climb or sit comfortably.

I may still try to way that I thought of just to see if it works. I will post the results. If all else fails, at least I have a back-up plan, right?

Yes I was wondering this too....I can see this way working for knit but would you have to do some side slits if you made it from cotton?

Great sew along btw....I thought it would be much more difficult than that!

As far as I can tell she hasn't had any restriction in her movement but she didn't wear it all that long, she had a yougurt incident with brother's yogurt that wasn't on the dinig room table like it should have been. grrrr

The skirt seems to move with the shorts. IE when she bends her knees to climb or crawl the short leg goes up her leg and since the skirt is totally attached it goes up too. KWIM? She has a RTW skort that is made the same way and it is even longer and still doesn't seem to be a problem. HTH

I also wanted to say that I can see it being restrictive if there is a back skirt panel. There might not be room for backwards movement.

I made one for DD but did it so that the skirt is separate from the shorts and only joined at the waist. I used a one piece pants pattern.....and converted to shorts. Measured the waist and cut out the skirt the same size.


Then I sewed the sides of the skirt together (with the side slits / vents at the bottom - whatever they're called lol).

Then placed skirt inside shorts - right side of skirt facing wrong side of shorts - pin and sew the waist all the way around.

Turned skirt out so its over the shorts - sew casing for waist leaving a gap at the bottom - insert elastic and finish off....

I made a skort from a pattern the other day, and it was a whole pair of shorts, made to the point of making an elastic casing, and then a skirt, with side vent, made to the point of elastic casing. It said to baste the tops together, then make the elastic casing, thread in elastic, yada yada. I found that to be to much fabric for the casing, so I hacked off the top inch & a quarter, put right sides facing, serged a seam around the top, flipped to right side, then sewed a casing down about an inch, leaving a bit open to thread through the elastic, yada yada. Came out much better!
