I haven't been able to get into AW for 2 days - again. This time we realized that it was our firewall that was preventing me from connecting to the server. DH figured it out, but I just wanted to say this in case this has happened to others.

PSA over. ;)

Do you have a firewall? If so, could it be that?

Does it count that it took 3 tries to open this thread? :p

Ever since the server upgrade or whatever, I keep getting "server not found" errors. It will give me that message one minute, the next it won't.

My firewall (Norton) is disabled.

We had a firewall that caused us problems until we reloaded Windows. Even disabled, or "uninstalled" firewall programs can still cause control issues. We finally wiped it out and found a new one that actually works. Just thought I'd throw my personal experience out there.

OMG! That cannot be Katie!! Is she nursing her baby? hehe Too cute!!! Love that she's nursing the babe even though the babe is holding a bottle!!!

I'm not coming to Maine afterall this Summer ($) so it looks like we won't be able to get our K/Catie's together this year finally. :o(

Thanks, Gwen, for posting your experiences. I am completely clueless when it comes to computers. It is sad. ;)

Can you tell me what firewall product? And is it something that RR is distributing?

Dude, RoadRunner is not the problem. I am on RoadRunner, and I'm not having any problems. I am also behind a firewall (safe computing and all that). There is clearly no one thing that is causing so many people connectivity problems.

also-
there are many isps who cache images and pages inorder to load them faster on your computer. if we have recently gone through an upgrade with something on the server having to do with ip addresses, there may be times that an isp serves you the old page instead of the new due to the caching... that would bring you to a page not found or some other mumbo jumbo.

bad news is that it is annoying. good news is that it is generally for 7 days at the most. (sometimes much less, when the isp flushes their cache)

Jo ~

My computer has Zone Alarm - I think that's it. It says ZA in my task bar area.

Oh, and we did not get it from RR. Sorry I don't know more. The thing is...today my Zone Alarm is up (I disabled it to get back in when I wasn't able to get in before) - but today it is up and somehow I am back in. I don't understand all this at all.

If you ahve any more questions, I am happy to help trouble-shoot this. The only thing is...I may need to have DH answer them for me.

Thanks, Jo.

Kristin :)

Please explain to me how I can get a server not found message one second and (literally) the next second a page comes up.

It usually takes 2 or 3 times to bring a page up.

My computer at work where I can't get on AW has ZA too. I'll have to try to disable it next time I can't get in.

If the firewall is not letting you in, can any of you forward me a portion of the firewall logs - the last entries that have to do amity's site ? Maybe that will shed some light.

Or is there an error message from the firewall program indicating why the site is inaccessible?

My firewall is disabled, I use Norton Internet Security. I get no error messages through it.

I am using Mozilla 1.6 and the only message I get is an alert window saying "www.amitymama.com can not be found. Please check the name." I refresh a few times and it comes up.

Earthlink is my ISP.

ok, just a guess, but maybe it could be that your isp uses different routers inorder to get to the address... meaning there are a few routers that have the old pages cached, and they have the problem. since your isp is so large, they probably have many different routers.

just my guess!

Just this week I have been having problems. I'm not sure why-- but I was getting the 'not found' messages.

Thanks for all the hard work you put into the site and keeping it running for us. :)

Except that this time around the IP addresses didn't change - for this site, the server, and for the nameservers, mailserver, etc... So in effect, the DNS entries are the same as they were before the server change. If they are using cached DNS records, it shouldn't matter because it should be the same as the current info.

The next time you have trouble connecting, please run a tracert and email me the results ( joshea @ amitymama.com ) - it may tell us if a particular server along the traffic route is dropping connections. There are instructions here.

I haven't been able to get on here for the last 2-3 days either. I disabled my Norton firewall and then I could get in. I enabled it and can still get on here now.

I've had problems twice this past week. Over the last weekend, and then again over the last couple of days. Just tonight, I'm able to get back in again. Whew! As far as I know, I don't have a firewall.

I know that another mama in my same town, who also uses Road Runner like I do, was having the same problem at the same time.
