Are there any mamas or papas out there who have put in their own a/c heating unit to save on costs? I think our a/c bit the dust today and found a site http://www.orderacdirect.com that helps you figure out what you need and sales the units at wholesale price. If hubby can't get the a/c going (he needs to rule out the belt first), then I was thinking this would be a good way to get one. The one I am looking at is made by goodman who makes them for Sears (Kenmore) and Amana. Any thoughts?

Here is a link to find out what size you need:
http://www.hvacopcost.com/equipsize.html
My husband has installed a furnace himself in a rental house, took him over a week worth's of work, no fun. The A/C we had professionally done, because you have to contend with opening up the system and recharging it. In some places, by law, 'normal' people are not allowed to do this sort of thing.
Call around if you decide to pay to get the work done. My husband bought a 75 btu furnace for $399 locally, brand new. This same guy sells on eBay, I can find the link if you are interested.
We paid $1000 last year to get a new A/C unit and this included installation. I think we got a good deal because it was a guy from our congregation and my daughter had just gotten out the hospital.
Google what problems you are having, because many of the small quirks you can fix yourself, like cleaning out the evaporator coils, etc.
Best wishes!
