She has a sinus infection that has been around for months. Her Dr. has given up on treating it because she's allergic to penicillin and it's derivitives...apparently it's the only thing left to try.

There's got to be something herbal/natural she can snort up her nose or take internally that would work, right?

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions? They're much appreciated!

ooh, though I've never tried one I know people who swear by those little pots...I can't remember what they are called...a netie pot maybe?
anyway it looks like a little tea kettle. there is a very specific way you poor it into your sinuses...it's supposed to be really helpful in getting rid of chronic sinus infections. Hopefully someone who actually has one can be more specific but if not i know exactly who to get better info from.

 Yep - The Neti Pot http://www.nutraceutic.com/Products/Ayurveda/AncientSecrets/ancientsecretsnetipot.htm

This topic just came up at a very mainstream board I visit and it is being given *rave* reviews by the skeptic of all skeptics.

Has she tried a chamomile steam?
Take some chamomile and put in a glass bowl, cover with boiling water.
Make a tent over head and bowl with towel or blanket.
Stay in there atleast 15 minutes.
works wonders.
hope she feels better soon.

If you don't have a neti pot, but you do have a baby- you know those blue nasal syringes? You can use that to shoot stuff up your nose.

The recipe I keep running across uses distilled water, pickling salt, and baking soda. I can tell you, you can use tap water- it's harsh with bleach and other chemicals. And you can use table salt, but iodine up the nose is not fun. You can measure, or you can just dump a tablespoon in water, and stir. If it's too saturated, it won't go into solution. Suck it up the syringe, and shoot it up your nose. You'll drain out your nose, and out the back of your throat.

Also, gargle with a warm salt solution. It gets the goop coating the back of your throat out. The salt also shrinks the tissue a little. I do this a lot in winter, to help keep my ears draining. I do it a few times over an hour. until I feel things really getting cleaned out. I do this in preference to the nose thing, also, if possible.

And yes, I sound like a congested yak in the bathroom in the morning.

There's a book, Sinus Survival, which is all about well- the title subject.

thanks!

That's what I ended up getting her. I searched for a neti pot but couldn't find one locally so I stopped at walmart and got a bulb syringe.

I found a recipe that called for 4oz warm water, 1/4tsp baking soda, 1/8tsp non-iodized salt, and 1-2 drops tea tree oil (leave out tto if no infection). I got her all the stuff and dropped it off a bit ago.

I got the impression from the searching I did that you're supposed to let the solution go in one nostil and come out the other...I didn't see anything about the throat. I'm not sure I'm understanding what you're saying here, Ari
. You'll drain out your nose, and out the back of your throat.

Just that you end up cleaning out that whole area or are you suggesting letting the solution run down your throat? (and then what? ....out the mouth?)

Thank you for all the ideas...I printed everything out for her.
