I'm just recovering from the fit of the century trying to get my 5yodd to use the new burt's bees stuff. She hates it to put it mildly, lol.

We were using Nature's Gate cherry gel, but I looked and it has sls in it.

So any recommendations for a good fluoride and SLS free children's toothpaste that my children will actually use?

Please help! I can't have mornings like this anymore...

Hi! We use the Tom's of Maine Silly Strawberry. My 18 mo. old seems to like it. There is one or two other flavors as well.

Good Luck!!:)

The Toms of Maine has SLS.

I bought some long ago before I knew about the problems with SLS and silly me...when I learned I didn't think about even checking the ingredients for some dumb reason so we still had it until Val (bluerosemama) pointed it out on another thread. Luckily dd thinks that it is cool to use Burts Lavender Mint because it is a kind of pinky-purply color. The taste is strong so she only uses a bit. And honestly she ends up swallowing most of it so I think the biggest benefit is not from the toothpaste itself but more from the action of brushing.

I'm sorry it isn't SLS free, but I thought I'd post it anyway since I have a little darling with a toothpaste prejudice (she judges waaaaaaay before she tastes). My DD has had problems with toothpaste ever since she was born. From "natural" to the buzz lightyear kind. Even the aforementioned "silly Strawberry" she hates it all. The ONLY ONE she has ever liked is a new kind: Tom's of maine natural liquid toothpaste. Goofy grape.

I tasted it too, and I just might switch. LOL (except I've found a brand with no SLS, and I don't have toothpaste aversion syndrome)

I know this is no real help to ~jenn~, but I had to post it, just in case it helps other mamas who would allow the SLS in this portion of daily life.

I'm sorry the burts bees one didn't work for you mama, but you're not alone. :)

We use Weleda children's tooth gel (Christine also still swallows her toothpaste cause she is three). They also have other flavors/types as well. No SLS, but I doubt any have fluoride in them. I use, myself, Jason's brand which has no SLS and their Plus ones have fluoride. I don't know which flavor a kid would like (maybe orange). I wouldn't recommend for kids the following two Jason's flavors: Healthy Mouth Paste (a clove, tea tree oil tasting toothpaste) or Peppermint to the Max (talk about flavor!).

I'll have to give the weleda a try. Last night and this morning wouldn't you know she didn't have a problem with the toothpaste. My 3 yodd won't get anywhere near it though...

Weleda children's tooth gel. DD has been using it twice a day since she got her first tooth over 4 years ago!

My boys stopped using the Weleda stuff about a year ago when they stopped making it in the US and started selling the European version here instead. It just didn't taste the same. We were stuck with the Tom's stuff for a while, but I recently found a new one that the kids like - it is a german toothepaste - the brand is Lavera Med. It has sorta a bland fruity taste. The ingredients are: Sorbitol, Water, Silica, Calendula-Extract, Xanthan, Sea Salt, Redbeet extract, Mallow extract, Natural Aromas, Grain Alcohol.
Not too bad..

Marcey, do you get your Weleda's at the Common Market or do you have a cheaper source?

Dd has decided that she does like the Burt's Bees (after I told her it was healthy :) ) So she's using that for now, but my 3yodd still won't touch it so I may try the Weleda's for her.

I LOVE the weleda creme so if their toothpaste is as good then they have a new customer!

Since I'm in the market for a natural toothpaste sans flouride and SLS, can I get Lavera Med or Weleda's at say a Trader Joes or Sprouts/Whole Foods type place. TIA

I buy it at Common Market. It takes Hadyn at least 2 months to go through a tube, so I guess the cost doesn't worry me too much. That's about 5 tubes a year. Sorry I don't have a better source. I do go down to the Wholefoods in Silver Spring about once a month. Want me to price it there?

~M

**edited to add: You know, I can order a case of the toothpaste (since I'm a Common Market Memeber) and we can split it. It's cheaper by the case.

I'm thinking this may be a tall order but are there any toothpastes out there that are flouride-free, SLS-free, calendula-free and don't have fruit flavors (or at least don't have any fruit or fruit juice in them)?

I'd prefer to avoid the flouride and the SLS but my youngest is allergic to calendula and most fruits (even tiny amounts of real fruit flavorings are too much for her). Is there anything out there like this?

Yikes! Can she handle the taste of baking soda? if so, just make a paste out of it and use it straight. another option is sea salt, although I don't think it'll readily make a paste, just dip a wet toothbrush into it. You can also combine it with fresh ground herbs like spearmint, or sage. You can even add a drop of spearmint EO if needed.

salt and baking soda are both strong flavors to overcome though, still, you might give it a try. :( Poor thing. I wish allergies didn't exsist.

This is for my 17 month old, but she has odd tastes (she's a huge fan of pickles and all green veggies, nothing wrong with that but just unusual for one of my children LOL), so I wouldn't be surprised if she did like baking soda. I'm going to try that. Thank you for the suggestion.

can she have orange oil? the burt's bees toothpaste is sls and fluoride free, no sweeteners, but the flavor comes from orange oil.

The Tom's of Maine Silly Strawberry says it's SLS is derived from coconut. What's the harm in that? Just curious.

Yes, please someone answer that. I've "known" it was bad for a long time now, but haven't known any real argument against it.

Oh, and BTW, I believe all SLS is derived from coconut. That's how companies making "natural" products can excuse it's presence in their product. Thanks for bringing up this point that I've been meaning to find out about for some time now. :)

Here's a link to more info about SLS (you'll need an Acrobat Reader to view these pages)

http://www.sweetsunnah.com/articles/danger.pdf

and one more...

http://www.cir-safety.org/staff_files/alerts.pdf

Interestingly, the first link basically says that people should avoid SLS but the second link says it's not a big deal.

dd *loves* KIDS dental gel by Logodent . It is german...it comes in a gold and white striped tube-I bought it a whole foods. The flavor she loves is Stawberry. It is yummy. I have no idea on the price-no sls or flouride. And - I just noticed-organic : )

I'll have to give the Weleda a try now too. I like to switch hygeine prods back and forth a bit

We just use plain hot water. It works just as well as toothpaste and is much safer. Any and all toothpaste can mess with the proper bacterial count in your mouth and actually cause cavities and viral outbreaks like canker sores and cold sores. For myself, if I find that my teeth are looking a little dingy and not as white as I like, I will brush with a paste of baking soda and water for a day or two in a row and then back to just hot water again. But I have never used the baking soda with my 4 year old because it isn't really necessary, but purely for cosmetic reasons.
Sea salt water also makes a good mouth rinse but you should not brush directly with it because it is too abrasive and can damage the teeth enamel. Holly.
