I would like to make some for Lydia and I. Is it a major PIA? Any good book or website recommendations? I am thinking about going w/ a kit, but the prices are turning me off.

I could've sworn my mom's GS council had some made from inner tubes. I'll ask her tomorrow. In the meantime, have you seen this: http://uberpest.50megs.com/snowshoes.html ? Also, you might consider renting some and seeing how much real use they get.
