My attempt at a sew-along/instructions for making wrap pants. I'm really not very good at explaining things, but I'll give it a shot! :) If none of this makes sense, just ask. I'll probably confuse you more. lol
Also, sorry about the quality of the pics . . . my camera is archaic & it's pretty dark in here. And yes, I know I need to learn how to use my iron. ;)
~~~~~~
The first thing to do is take waist, length & crotch (sorry! can't think of the correct term! lol) measurements.
Waist--around the waist
Length--from waistline to ankle
Crotch--from back waist, between legs, to bellybutton
Add 2" to each measurement. For example, Rio's measurements are: 20"W, 19"L, 16"C . . . so the adjusted measurements for her pants are 22"W, 21"L, and 18"C.
Fold your fabric over, right sides together. Cut a square (rectangle?) in the measurements of your waist & length. For Rio, I cut a square 22" wide and 21" long. (pic #1)
Next is the crotch cut. You can either center the cut directly in the middle of the piece, or move it slightly to one side. On these, I moved the cut 1" from the actual center. Even if you cut in the actual center, the pants will turn out fine.
The shape of the cut is somewhere between a U and a V. The width of the cut should be approximately 4-7", depending on whether you're doing pants for an adult or child. The width is also approximately 1/2 the length of the cut. For example, with Rio's, her adjusted measurement was 18". So, I cut down 7", across 4", and up 7" . . . but in a U/V shape. I'm having a hard time explaining this. lol
Another example, if I was making these for myself, I have an adjusted C measurement of 24". I would cut mine down about 9.5", and the distance across the cut would be 5". If this part is as confusing to you as it sounds to me when I'm reading it, just lmk & I'll try to figure out a better way to explain. (pic #2)
Now, seperate the two pieces of fabric. Serge around each edge--top, bottom, sides (but not in the crotch cut) on each piece. (pic #3)
Next, with the pieces still seperate, turn under the sides and the bottom edge of each piece, and hem. I turned ours under 3/8". Do *not* turn under the top edges. (pic #4)
With right sides together, serge the crotch seam (the U/V). (pic #5)http://www.amitymama.com/vb/attachment.php?s=&postid=899556
For this pair, I used some ribbon I already had for the ties. However, you can make the ties from self-fabric. Just make your ties like straps (stitch in tube & turn ~or~ fold over edges, fold in center, and then stitch edge)--about 1/2" wide, and 14"(ish) long. You'll need 4 of them.
Sew one tie to the wrong side of each top corner (places marked with * in the photo). (pic #6)
Fold top edges over toward wrong side, and stitch "waistband".
You're done! Pants will wrap around and tie at back waist, and then wrap other piece around to front and tie in front. (pic #7)
Here's the link to the first pair of pants I made for Rio, if you need more visual clues. ;)
Thanks for doing this....
I have this piece in my stash that's perfect for this. And, as I said before, I have NO clothes...so I might just have to try this...
i don't have enough of any one cut for me to make mom pants. I might have to break my stash game promise of no new fabric in order to make these. They are great and look so comfy!
The directions appear to be very easy to follow (I say appear because I haven't actually tried to follow them yet).
I do think knits would work . . . I've been contemplating trying a pair made from a knit, too. lol
The only thing I think might be different would be the waist size/measurement. We might want to cut the waist an inch or so smaller if the knit is really stretchy, so it will be tighter in the waist and not stretch out too much when they're tied.
Cool, thanks for the sew along. I understand the sewing instructions, but I still can't figure out how they tie and how they don't open up to show off your bum.
Are they tieing at the side seams? Or the front pieces tie to the front pieces behind you and the backs overlap the front and then tie to each other at the front?
Thanks?
Yeah. First you put the front part on and wrap it around to the back, tieing the "front ties" in back of you. Then, you put pull the back part up (over the already tied and wrapped "front"), wrap the edges around to the front of you, and tie the "back ties" in the front. Egads, I liked your explanation better. lol!
The sides don't open up and expose you because there's fabric wrapped underneath it. They may open a little at the bottom (like an ankle slit), but that's it.
If that didn't help, jlmk . . . I could take pics of putting them on Rio, step by step, for a better visual explanation. ;)
That helped perfectly! And I got out some fabric earlier and played with wrapping it around myself. Worked for my, but dh thinks I'm weird, lol.
