I got this today for $1 a yard at WM, of course with no material content. Wouldn't it be nice if they put the content on the selvage? It feels like cotton, and made in the USA is always a +. What do you think? I've heard about a burn test. What do you look for?

cut a snipet off, and burn it. if it burns away to ash only, then it's 100% cotton. if there is a curled up mess of goo, then there is poly in it.

if you rub the ash between your fingers and it feels gritty it has a blend

Smell it.

I learned this trick from an owner of a fabric warehouse. He said that fabric that has been aired a bit has a distinctive smell due to the fibers. Cotton smells sweet, poly has a very distinctive odor....it reminds me of my grandmother's sewing room, she loved poly double knit, wool smells musty, silk smells clean, rayon is hard for me to describe.....its usually in a blend and it has a clean smell, but a little sweeter than silk. DH was laughing at me when we went shopping in the fabric district in Los Angeles. I would feel, then smell and I would drop anything that had poly in it so fast. Oh, something with Lycra in it has a different smell too.....it smells like cotton with limes in it.

Cotton=sweet
wool = musty
silk=clean
rayon= clean sweeter than silk :)
Lycra=cottom with lime (sounds like it would go well with rum)
Poly = like Heathers grandma's sewing room :)

hey i think i picked up that same fabric at my wallyworld for $1/fabric. The one I picked up that looks just like that definitely has lycra in it and is very stretchy. I haven't done a burn test, but I'm guessing, is it's a cotton lycra.

I'm fixin' to make me a nursing shirt out of mine one of these days when I'd rather sew than sleep, lol.

I was thinking it probably has 4% lycra too, which doesn't bother me. It is stretchier than my prr.

I have been eyeing that at JoAnn's in the clearance aisle for months, lol! It says 97% cotton 3% lycra on the bolt at JA's (tee hee, yes, I remember, lol! I like stripes!)
