X-POST....

I am searching for a Romertopf-style covered clay pot to bake European artisan bread. Apparently, you can bake bread similar to those in wood-fired ovens with these style clay pots. Does anyone have an extra...or one they don't use stashed in the cupboards somewhere??

Here's a pic:

There are some on ebay, but I'd love to buy one from a mom here. Anybody have any experience with these?

I have one that I never got the hang of using correctly. Tried a couple of meat dishes in it and they turned out sorta "soggy". But, I'd love to hear about cooking bread in it....that sounds interesting.

Mimmy......here's a link with the instructions. I'm going to try this as soon as I nail down a Romertopf baking pot. If you wanna get rid of yours....lemme know!!

This article has some very interesting information about the health benefits of traditional bread preparation vs. how we prepare it today.

Hmm.. sounds worth a try. I just need some spring wheat (i usually only keep winter berries on hand..) and a bowl to proof the flour in and I'll give it a try. Dh will know that I am trying some new Weston Price thing when he sees the jar of starter sitting around ("whatcha fermenting today, dear?"). I'll let you know how it goes, I've never been able to part with the clay cooker, maybe this is what I'll end up doing with it.

LOL on the fermentation thing :) I usually have stuff "sitting out" too. We use kefir regularly, so there's always a jar of kefir on the counter, doin' its thing.

The bread instructions look kinda complicated....but I hope to figure out a way to incorporate weekly bread making into our lives. My mom was a baker while we were growing up and the smell of bread baking is an integral part of my childhood. I want my kids to remember that too :)

Lemme know how it goes, okey dokey? If you're a WAP fan....you oughtta check out the Nourishing Traditions thread here:
