When I posted my bum wipes, I was asked how to do the 4 corner turn on the serger. So, I took pictures this time and decided to inspire all of you to make some wipes!! Join me in using your flannel stash and make some wipes!!!

OK, off we go................

Step one : Cut your flannel. I cut mine 6" x 6". If you are making nose wipes, then they only need be 1 ply. If you are making bum wipes, then cut 2 squares per wipe. Be sure to cut them very straight. This will help when you serge. You can either use your rotary cutter or measure, snip and rip the fabric. Both works.

**I appologize for the quality of some of these pictures. It is really hard to get close ups of the presser foot area of my serger.**

Step two: If you are making bum wipes: place two, wrong sides together, and put in position on your serger. If you are making nose wipes, then just position one square. Do not line it up so that the blade cuts the fabric, but instead, place it under your presser foot with the square cut edge against your blades. Serge.

Step three: Serge to the bottom edge of that side. Then, chain one stitch off the edge and end with your needles in the up position.

Step four:: Now, here is the tricky part. I could NOT get a good picture of this, sorry. If you look at the throat plate of your serger, you will see "fingers" that point toward the back of the serger. Your serger thread kinda knits off of these as you serge. Now, raise your presser foot. Clear the stitch fingers by pulling slightly the slack in the needle thread and sliding the stitches off the fingers. Pull the needle thread taut above the tension discs to remove any extra slack.

Step five: Pivot the fabric, aligning the cut edge of fabric with the knife. Lower the needle into the previous stitches on the new stitch line. Lower presser foot and serge the second side.

Step six: Repeat this with the next corner. Then, on the final corner, serge off the edge and leave a long chain.

Last steps in next post........

Step seven: Get a large darning needle, insert it about 2"-3" into the back side of the serging stitches near top edge. Thead the needle with the serged tail and pull through.

Now, cut thread at the point where it leaves the serged edge. Taaa Daaa, you have a wipe! Happy bum and nose wiping!!!!

I have got to give that a try! (Does it work for knits too or are they too stretchy?)

Thanks so much. I will definitely give it a try - tomorrow when I'm not so tired!

That looks awesome, I need to try that! What kind of thread are you using, it looks really silky.

Knits work fine, just set your differential feed so they don't stretch out.

Just regular old Maxi lock. I thought about using wooly, but I really don't like the stuff.

BTW, you can do the same 4-corner serge with a rolled hem, it's just a bit trickier to turn the corners.

Thanks for the sew-a-long Marcie. I will definitely try this!

My son is looking over my shoulder and wants to know where you got that swirly flannel fabric. He just has to have it. :p Please provide the details.

Thanks - Ramie

Marcey, I love the flannel!

With the rolled hem, I've learned to skip the 1 chain off the end before turning, it always ends up funky. Instead, I just serge to the corner and turn. I'm still working out the kinks (as you will see when you get the ones I sent you) but it seems to be working.

dig that funky flannel!!! only the best for your tushie hey!!

I am going to give this a try... I don't quite understand how you get the extra stiches off the stitch finger without having a bunch of stiches hanging off the corrner but perhaps when I actually do it I will understand better.

Thank you Marcey! You've just cut a ton of work from my spring swap project!

Actually, you were one of the people who asked last time for a visual on this! I had completely run out of flannel after my first round of bum wipes. Then, my serger went into the shop. So, this is the first time I've been able to get to it. Glad I could help.

That's why you only chain off one stitch. If you chain off more, you will get a small clump in the corner. That one chain off gives you a bit of stretch to make the corner turn and get in position for the next side. HTH.

I got it at the quilting flannel aisle at Jo Anns.

Good thing! Cause you're getting a set of the swirlies in the mail!
:D

Marcey ---> who started her morning with a cloth bum wipe and followed with a good nose blow in a new cloth booger rag!!!

That explanation makes it much more comprehensible than I thought it would be! Though, I am kinda lazy & will probably continue with my curved corners, lol:p

Thank you, thank you! Your timing is impeccable, last night Nathan told me he needed a soft cloth (our term for booger rags :p). He is now the proud owner of a 6" perfectly square-cornered, serger tail tucked in hanky.

DH was so not impressed with my masterpiece.
