we have two computers on our network (win2000) and have been sharing cable internet via the network for several years. we recently moved, and our new isp assures us that we can have as many computers sharing our access as we can fit on our network, but so far only one will connect. :-(
i spent quite a long time on the phone with tech support, to no avail. she said that it looked like everything was as it should be, and things should be working. so i've spent a couple of days googling, and the answers i'm finding are very different from what i'd expected. :sigh:
it appears that we were previously using an isp that provided separate IP addresses for each computer. but our new one doesn't. so does that mean i need to replace our network hub with an actual router? i've seen references to using a component of win2000 to share access, but it requires a second NIC card in the gateway computer. i'm getting so frustrated.
can anyone clarify any of this for me? i want to just plug my computer into the hub (to which the cable modem is connected) and access the internet the way i used to. is that too much to ask??????
thanks for any help or clarification anyone can offer.
