Do ya'll remember I made my 4 y.o. dd a waldorf doll for her bday in dec? Well, I thought she loved it, but she doesn't. I noticed she didn't play with it often, and asked why. She said it wasn't a 'baby'. So I suggested I could turn it into a baby. (Take the hair off/out, sew on a little baby hat.) She wanted to think about it, and then saw a picture of a mermaid waldorf doll in The Play Store catalog. She has now decided she wants that. SO, how do I do that? Any ideas on creating a pattern for this? Or what kind of material to get? Ugh!! The things I do for that girl ;) Thanks mamas, I look forward to your replies.

Could you convert her with a mermaid outfit? A swimsuit top and a tail to pull on over her legs. Maybe sew some flowers into her hair.

I would lay the doll on a sheet of paper and draw a tail around the doll, oh about an inch out from the doll. Cut 2, sew together and add elastic. I would fiddle around and probably add a snap or velcro closure.
Use scrap fabric for your prototype, then when you have it perfect, cut up your prototype for a pattern.
I don't have a pattern, I freestyle at the machine. LOL.

Danielle made me a mermaid tail for my son's doll. It is two pieces of velour sewn together in the shape of the tail and then has elastic at the waist.
It is very easy for him to get on and off. His doll doesn't have a top since it is a boy doll and he doesn't need one. But you might be able to get away with doing a tank top or something similar.

Thanks for the suggestions. One more question, should there be leg holes or more like a skirt? KWIM?

I was searching around HGTV for instructions on a different craft and I stumbled upon a listing for a mermaid doll. It was from an episode of Crafters Coast-to-Coast that aired on January 18th -- I'm bummed I missed seeing it. It really caught my attention b/c the woman who was featured is from Portland, too. Anyway, if you go to HGTV.com and search for "mermaid doll" you should be able to find the instructions, though they are not extremely detailed. It also listed a website for her work www.wingsandwonderswaldorfdolls.com

I just looked around on her site briefly. Her dolls look really beautiful.

Go to the craft store and buy a bag of shells and try making a top with those. You'd need 3 holes in each one and just string them together with ribbon.
Just an idea and you wouldn't have to figure out how to do a top that way.
