i putting my heart and soul into this cause, before i had only donated some patchy reversible pants and some blankets, it is now my obsession.
http://www.thediaperhyena.com/sewfororphans.htm
can you sew from a pattern? please see the above page for info. i will be receiving the overalls pattern in a couple of weeks and would be happy to make copies and send them out. here is a snippet from the site above:
"What can you do? :: Right now we are working to make available a simple pattern for the one-piece overalls the children in these Ukrainian baby homes wear. As explained earlier, these overalls have 'feet' and simple ties at the top for ease of taking on and off - making caring after the babies and toddlers easier. They do not involve sewing button holes or working with snaps or zippers. The preferable materials for these items are flannel, heavy cotton or lightweight denim to withstand the wear and tear of regular usage and numerous washings by an industrial machine.
Requirements :: This one-size pattern calls for:
1/2 yard if working with 60" fabric and 3/4 yard if 45" fabric.
2.5 yards bias tape (Narrow width is suitable, but wide width is best. Directions included for making your own)
Thread suitable for sewing/serging (cotton suggested)
Flannelette, heavy cotton, lightweight denims suggested. (Natural fabrics are best for moisture absorption and the extreme heat required to meet the laundering regulations - knit and fabric blends are often not suitable.) "
i am also collecting flannel blankets for the orphanage. if you have any old receiving blankets, or flannel fabric, or would like to make some yourself! you can send them to me and i will drive them over to one of the head mamas (she lives only 2 hours away) so they can ship out!
for more info, questions, or for my mailing address email me at:

thanks for reading this far
editing to add: heather will be putting up a pdf file of the pattern in a few days!!!

This is wonderful, thank you for posting this Branwyn. I'm in once you get the pattern up.
And FYI for any Mamas who are also interested in doing this, I found a bunch of last years holiday flannel in the bargain bonanza at my JoAnn's for $1.88/yd. It is nice THICK and quite soft too. Not the prettiest flannel around but I think it would be soft and warm for these babies and toddlers!
I think this is what I will be using the birthday $ my Grandma just sent me for.
*edited to add--all the bargain flannel I saw was 100% cotton too!*

wonderful!!! thank you so much for posting about the flannel.
i would really like to be able to have all the AW mamas (and MD mamas) send the overalls, fabric, and/or blankets directly to me, heather s. has said that its super cool for me to be the contact for these places. and i can drive them over to heather and kind of "present them" in the name of the boards. FYI the organizations cannot pay for your shipping to us and shipping to the orphanage comes out of our pockets at this time (they are in the midst of setting it up at a non-profit org), they will be setting up a paypal account for those who would like to donate to cover shipping. kim at thebabymarketplace.com accepts monetary donations, as well as food, toys and cloth dipes!

I'm still trying to learn sewing but I DO have a ton of recieving blankets my son never used and flannel is on sale at the Walmart for $1 a yard right now. I will pick some up and ship it off to you. I'll email you once I get the flannel and once the pattern goes up I'm going to try it too. Hopefully THIS will get me sewing. :)

I have tons of blankets & infant clothing that I can send.
I was skimming through the links, and it just breaks my heart! I think I need to start looking into foreign adoption. Are these children able to be adopted in America?

well heather will have the pattern in a pdf form, on the site, in a few days, so if that works for you then thats great! if not i will be dling it (this way it saves the organization shipping money) and i can make a copy and send it to you. whichever works better for you!

If you haven't read about the Ukraine orphanages, please take the time to do so. It has really touched my heart.
I would love to organize some kind of stash game or sewalong for this cause. Does anyone have any ideas of something we can do? They really need cloth diapers and warm clothing. I know we can put something together....throw out some ideas!

I would love to make some of those little bibs as well as some receiving blankets. I also have a couple of larger dipes that I just made that will never fit my skinny mini shrimpy boy.
Do you know if they want fitteds or flat or prefolds? Tell me exactly what they are accepting so I can get busy

I found the page that listed all of the things they could take and upon reading it I realized that I have at least a large cardboard toilet paper box full of items that I can send including 20 pair of new shoes, blankets, dipes, hygiene items, and outerwear.
Now I just have to figure out a way to cover the astronomical shipping cost.

Branwyn, in your first post you said one of the women spearheading this here lives close to you and that maybe you would get stuff shipped to you and then you'd drive it all over to her as one donation from Amity Mamas. Are you talking about just the overalls and flannel or is this woman collecting all donations? I guess I'm wondering what we should send to you and what goes elsewhere. Thanks.

Also, any word on when the pattern will be available? How long from that time until the time you'd like to have the donations to you so you can take them over (for those of us sending to you)?

I don't make diapers, but I can do practically anything else.....
I am game for ordering a roll of killington from Holly, and making blankets, wipes and whatever else needs to be made.
anyone nearby that needs any?
A 50 yard bolt is $90 plus shipping.
The more you buy the cheaper it is, but I really can't afford it right now.....
So if anyone wants any, or wants to pitch in, I will do the sewing. I think a simple serged edge will be fine on the blankets and wipes - and I am anxiously awaiting the overall pattern.
LMK if this is ok~

well she lives about 2-3 hours from me, but still in the same state. good question, let me email her and ask what she wants to do about that and i will post here when she writes me back (usually takes a few hours).
as for the overalls pattern, she still has to receive it in the mail and scan it and convert it to pdf. so it will probably be about a week.
i will post back when i hear from her

So do you know if this will be an ongoing thing, or will we have a deadline to get stuff to you, Branwyn?
Also, I plan on donating formula via the babymarketplace in lieu of gifts for several relatives on my Christmas list. Just wanted to throw that idea out there in case anyone else has hard to buy for people who appreciate good causes ;)

I just paid for a banner ad at the top for 30 days, because I think this is a very good cause. Heather's group is in the process of going non-profit, but till the paperwork is done, they have to pay for the advertising. The banner is paid until December 18th. If anyone wants to make a donation, no matter how small, to help cover this cost, please pm me. thanks~

I even bought a banner for a month...rofl, but it is for a great cause. I am sure Branwyn will post as soon as the pattern becomes available. I know I will keep checking. I have put boxes and boxes of stuff together already. I contacted 2 dental offices where I have "connections", and I am getting donations of children's toothbrushes, children's toothpaste, and dental floss.....as well as al their old scrub uniforms. I find people are very willing to give if they know it is for a good cause!
There is a link in Heathers site with a HUGE list of all kinds of stuff that they NEED. Things we take for granted EVERYDAY!!!
My heart goes out to these kids.....

I have a friend who just adopted a baby from Belarus, Russia (her 4th adopted from there) and she told me they don't use diaper covers there...they use tights to hold up prefolds. When the baby uses their diaper the whole outfit gets changed. I'm wondering if it's the same with this orphanage.
Does anyone know if that pattern for tie overalls made it to the boards yet? I've been keeping an eye out but haven't seen it.
Sherrie...I could go in on some Killington for this. I probably won't have time to sew until after the holidays but I can prepare for it now. How much per yd...do you know? I'm thinking I could do maybe 20yds worth.

Sorry. Been away from the computer for a while. I am trying to finish up some sewing for other people so I can get started on this.
I am thinking: wool covers would work well because they can be hung to dry out, but would it be gross to use a cover on a different baby? (which would happen more than likely).
Also, I am thinking that quick-dry fitteds or AIO's would be best since they don't seem to use pins very much. Like a fleece or wool cover with a fold-out soaker (prefold, whatever) that can be hung to dry. -or- we could do a bunch of birdseye flats...
Sherrie, do you have any more birdseye available?? I can use the yardage that I bought from you to make some...plus I just got a bunch of killington in the mail, so when the pattern goes up, I can use it for those.
I just got a bunch of wool that wasn't expected, so I can use that for covers.
Also, Branwyn, has the winter shipment been sent already or is there a timeline for it?

hey guys Xpost of info from heather:
For those interested in getting a 'move-on' regarding this Aid For Orphans program . . . well, I'm right there with you. I feel like we can't do anything fast enough! Right now we are in the process of filing for our non-profit status. This can take up to a year according to the woman that is working with me on it. We have to do it right and make sure all the i's are dotted and t's are crossed so it doesn't get kicked back to us. Until we have that status we will not be able to apply for grants or solicit large donations from bigger companies. It means less incoming monies at the onset simply because people want a write-off (at least big industry does). So, until we have those monies, we are having to keep this at the level that we can afford to maintain it with contributions from our personal budgets, our business budgets and those that are willing to contribute for shipping. Shipping, by far, is our biggest concern. It wil literally cost in the hundreds each time we make a shipment.
For this time we will be taking in the following items: unopened, new medicines (Tylenol and the like), cotton sheets, flannel blankets 36x36 is good, but smaller gently used ones will work as well, the baby overalls that need sewing, monetary dontations to pay for formula, diapers and the like. Although other things ARE needed, for the money to ship them there, we could purchase the children more than a month's worth of food - so, food will come first for now.
At present we have a paypal account donations@aidfororphans.org AND we will have several different areas that can be contributed to within the next 48 hours as our website goes up. It is an exciting time and we have literally worked around the clock to get this to fruition. Please have any mommas contact me that have any questions. I can be reached at heather@aidfororphans.org .
The pattern will be both downloadable, and in a matter of weeks, a physical pattern that can be mailed out. We have an engineer woman that is cleaning up the .pdf for the pattern that Kinko's slaughtered. She is having it scaled appropriately and we anticipate 48 hours until we can make it available.
We look forward to where this will go in the future - perhaps even here within our own nation where orphans abound as well, but for now we feel led to help this country that can hardly help itself.

I saw on one of the links I followed about this that we can mail directly to one of the places I think? Any clue how much more it would be to do that, rather than mailing to you?
Say, I had a 30 pound box of stuff to mail. If I mailed it to you, cheapest would be $xx.xx. If I mailed it to them, cheapest would be $xx.xx. I've never shipped packages overseas so not sure what it involves as far as paperwork (customs??) and cost.
Maybe some of us could manage that anyway to help lighten the shipping load if it wasn't completely outrageous.

I am thinking about asking my church for support on this. Maybe if a bunch of us go in together who have more than just the few things on the list (ie: scrubs aren't on the list, so if someone wanted to send them, they could, to this alternate group, to ship.) we could send over a seperate shipment. Now, I am saying this, but have NO idea about shipping costs either, if they are going to be astronomical, it may not work. I am also going to contact Mennonite Central Committee, who does projects like this all over the world, to see if they have any connections in the Ukraine and could possibly help us get some things over there. THey distribute all kinds of food, blankets, diapers, and other aid all over the world, so there is a chance they will be willing to help.
Man, is anyone else here feeling the need to adopt? I loved being pregnant and having a little baby, but this tears at my heart. :(

From what I can tell it will be over $100 for shipping to the Ukraine for a 35 lb. package.
It will be about $32.00 for a 10 lb. package.
I just went to the USPS and FedEx websites and did a rate calculation using the zip code for Kherson 73000. FedEx is really expensive...like over $300. Are there any other ways to ship overseas? Does UPS do it?

UPS is expensive too around $430 for a 30 lb package!!

I had an idea last night: a stash game specifically for sewing for the orphans. ??
What do you think?? Anyone can donate $ for shipping, and we can all sew from our stashes (when the pattern goes up). The winner can have the pride and joy in clearing out her stash AND helping some children who need it at the same time! :D

Well, I have a 35 lb package ready to go, and I have been trying to sell things for shipping.....with no luck. It iwll cost about $130 to ship direct. I was going to try to do it that way to avoid double shipping ...to Heather/Melanie and then to the Orphanage. But I can afford the $25 shipping over the $135...I wil figure something out....Either way it is going this weekend!!!

I just got the pattern enlarged today so I thought I'd whip up a pair to see how long it took. These are very, very easy. They'd be much easier with wider bias tape but I'm using stuff in my stash and narrow is all I have right now.
Supplies:
3/4 yard 45" flannel
3 1/3 yards bias tape
If anyone is interested in sewing these but doesn't want to drag the kiddos out and to the copy store to enlarge the pattern, just drop me a PM with your address and I'll send you an enlarged pattern next week. I'm going to get several copies made to have on hand. I have an irl friend who's going to sew and a few others who are interested so I thought I'd keep a few on hand to save some mamas the trouble of taking the kids to the copy store.

It's in pdf format, so I'm not sure if it'll C&P or not. I'll try and if it won't work I'll re-type them, they're not that long. I'll post again in a minute.

Super easy! I'm not a very quick sewer but I think the next pair will take 15 minutes tops, from cutting to completion.

Could we use FOE instead of the bias tape, do you think? I definitely can't get out of the house to get bias tape, but thanks to Lisa I've got oodles of FOE I can use :thumb

I think it depends on how stretchy it would be. The instructions say to leave 10"-12" on each end and it's what's used to tie over the shoulders to keep the garment on. If it's not too stretchy to tie, I don't see why it would work :)

Glad they were easy... It encourages me to do it. I did approach our 4H group about making some as a Community Service project.

I was lucky enough to stumble upon several packages at WM on clearance for $.34, but not in the best colors. Other than that, I'm anxious to see if anyone else knows. I'm going to be needing a lot too and it is expensive!

I've been searching around since I posted this, and I think I found some here:
http://www.homesew.com/binding.html#46
What width do I get? Single fold? Double fold?

You can buy a little gizmo to make your own. In the past I've cut and made bias from several yards of muslin at a time & then just rolled it onto cardboard for use whenever. I think Clover makes the tool, they sell it at JA's and WM too. I bought a couple different sizes once when JA had their notions 1/2 price.
You basically lay out your fabric and cut it on the diagonal into strips the appropriate size (the tool says how big to cut for what size/type tape). You can do single & double fold. Once you have a strip you spray a little starch on it, thread it into the tool and pull it out the other side while ironing the fabric flat. Takes a little practice to get the technique down but very easy once you get going. You can also sew the strips all end to end and make really big pieces. For baby/children's clothes you really don't need to but for blankets I had to make them longer. Again, the package explains how to do the seams properly.
You can do it without the tool, they even have the free little "Craft Sheets" at JA's that explain how, but IMO, it's a PITA without the tool.
Good luck :)

LOL--on that link Amanda posted there's a similar tool. That one does fusible bias for stained glass quilts. But the one I'm talking about looks a lot like it.

You know, Legacy has oodles of that stuff, *cheap*. Maybe Suzanne or Kori would go and pick some up for people? It would be pot luck on the colors, but cheap!

I'd be willing to do that..for the AFO project. I think it's 10-25 cents a package..it's hit and miss there. If anyone's interested PM me and I'll check it out tomorrow.

From that link I posted, 1/2" single fold in white is $9.75 for a 100yd roll. Do you think Legacy has it cheaper than that? That seems pretty cheap to me, but every penny counts, right? ;) I want to buy it in a roll, so I don't waste any, since the pattern calls for 2 1/2 yds, and the packages all come in 3yds. Thanks for the suggestion on how to make my own, but I know I wouldn't ever get that done...I'm too lazy. :o

the double fold would be easier to use, the price you listed sounds great too. I would go for White, then you can use it for any color.

I used single-fold on the first pair I made because it was all I had on hand. It was a pain. The instructions call for double-fold and now I know why :p I think they go together a lot faster with the double fold.
Thanks for posting that link, I'm going to order some too. For that price it'll be nice to have on hand.

Per request from Michelle/kkdmommy here are the demisions of the pattern after it was blown up.

These are general demesnions to get you started. I have taken picts but have to wait for dh to be home to upload them... my computer can't manage to find the correct softwear even after it has been loaded. :sigh:
Note: These measurements are taken off a pattern that has been cut from 16 times so there might be slight variations.
Front:
Just a smidge bigger than 25" long x 8.5" wide at the widest point.

Back:
23.5" long and 9" wide
Link only because of size

Foot:
Fits in a 5.5" x 5.5" square. (I was shocked to realize that.)
http://www.amitymama.com/vb/attachment.php?s=&postid=862009
Crotch:
7.75 tall x 3.5" wide using the straight of grain as the width.

Hopefully, that can get you started with your pattern making.
I'll post picts later.
Ask if you need a specific measurement.
I'm off to sew since dh has the kids!
