I don't know all the technical language - so please bear with me! I used to have my website hosted through Wahmall...it was called iwahm.com. Someone else bought the company and transfered all our files over to a new place. The new place doesn't let us edit our files...just rename, copy or move. She says she is trying to figure it out, but I have been asking her about this for 2 months. My website needs to be updated!

My question is...is there any program that I can buy that will allow me to make edits? Is it expensive?

I have no clue how to edit my webpage without the user friendly set up that I once had.

Thanks!

Sounds like you need to find a new host.

Here's a question for you: how do you get your files to the server in teh first place? Do you creat a file on your computer and then use an FTP program to move the fil from your computer to her server, or do you have to create all of your files on her server initially?

If you have to create all of your files on her server, say with an online editing program, then it sounds like you're just out of luck. What you may be able to do in this case is open the file you want to edit, copy it, create a new file, paste,a nd then edit and upload. Does that make sense?

If you can create files on your own computer and then FTP them, there are lots of programs you can use, including Arachnaphilia and Homesite which I *think* are free. Then there are more expensive programs like Dreamweaver and Go Live used by professionals.

I can't really help you though until I know more about the situation.

Thanks Anise for your quick reply :0)

I used to be able to create all my files online with html (or I think that's what it was!) Yes - it was an online editing program. I have no formal training in creating websites, I'm self taught...so again, I don't know most of the terms.

That server site no longer exists. A new one was created and we no longer have the option of clicking on a file and having a box with all the html pop up. It used to be that way, and it was very easy for me to edit.

I can not access the html at all now. When I click on an html file, all that comes up is the actual website page.

Yes - it looks like I need a new host...how does that work? Will I have to start my website over from scratch? Otherwise, I don't know how I would transfer files?

What is FTP?

Thanks,
Candy

Okay. I think I"m understanding you now. Your new host doesn't have an online editor, and that's wha tyou want.

Gosh, I'm not sure what to tell you except that it would really benefit you to do some research ont he topic if you're going to have a website and maintain it yourself. Because there's a lot you don't know, and it's not really soemthing I can sum up in a post!

FTP (file transfer protocol) is a program that takes a file from your computer and uploads it to another computer elsewhere. It sounds like your new host doesn't allow online editing, and you'll have to create your own files on your computer and FTP them to your site. This is the traditional way that most hosts work.

One site I can recommend without reservation is http://www.htmlgoodies.com. Maybe another person here can recommend soemthing elsefor you. This will explain how to create the webspages, but I"m not sure it talks abotu how to deal with file transfers.

Umm, who is your host? Usually your host shoudl have information on their site about how to get your files to the server, etc.

Yes - you're absolutely right...I should know more about maintaining a website and doing research, but the type of editing I did was very simple and I really didn't need to know much. For the harder stuff, I always hired someone to take care of that for me. So it was never a problem, until the owners changed and changed the server (without warning us). To be honest, I think I know more than the new owner...who is Susan of kittypage.com

I do know how to load up files...there is a button for that. It's editing the file that I can no longer do.

Someone else who has done work for me just contacted me, so I will probably host through her.

Thanks again!
