I do a virus scan every Friday night like clockwork since getting a virus a month or so ago. (I have Norton and McAfee and I followed the directions from Symantec to get the other virus off and it was fine.)

This morning I see that there is a virus on my computer, Backdoor.Imiserv

Norton failed to quarantine or delete it. I followed Symantec's directions to a tee again, and when I went into the registry to where it told me to go to delete it, it wasn't there. Yet when I scanned it again, it still comes up as having a virus.

I did a search on my computer to find the supposed infected file, and it says it can't find it unless I am online, I go online and I find it, but I don't have an option to delete it, just to extract it. I go to extract it, and I get a pop up from Norton telling me that it has detected a virus on my computer and removed it.

What do I do now? From looking around at Symantec's website, it looks as if the only other option I have is to call their tech line, but for $40 a pop, I want to make sure I have no other option first.

Any ideas of what I can do? I am running the online virus detection from symantec right now.

And now am I getting a virus if I have McAfee and Norton? The only things I open up are pics of peoples kids that people I know have sent me. I don't open up anything else. Ugh. I have literally spent the entire day on this freaking computer trying to get the virus off and I am so stressed out.

Is this the page:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/backdoor.imiserv.html

And are your virus definitions up to date? This is a really old virus as these things go - Sept. 2002.

Yes, that's the page. And the date confused me too, since all my virus definitions are up to date. I have the Live virus update that automatically updates it, and I keep up to date w/ security patches from Microsoft too. Ugh. I have no clue about any of this stuff. My dh usually does this, but being 6,000 mi. away, he can't do much. Ugh. How stressful. What will happen to my system if I can't get it off?

Well, it's a worm/trojan horse. The worse it could probably do is send out e-mails and stuff.

Have you run a FULL system scan, making sure to include all folders, etc.? Use the default settings for Norton - I've found they usually catch everything.

Sometimes it can take a couple of scans before everything is caught.

You might also want to try dowloading Spybot Search & Destroy which will not only work on some viruses, but it mainly used to get rid of spyware and popups.

I had a spyware infestation a few weeks ago, and this was the only thing that got rid of it and continues to block the suckers, too.

I am pretty sure I did a full system scan. I will check again, but I think I have it set to do the entire computer. Hmmm, I just did the online scan from symantec and it says that my system is totally free of viruses and trojans. Why would it say there is none, when the Norton scan said there is one? I am so confused! LOL! Is it possible that the Norton scan is wrong? I am going to check out the link you gave me now.

Norton could be wrong. I do trust Symantec alot, tho'.

Sounds like you are doing everything right!
