I have a hard time reading and figuring out instructions that require turning so I figured out this way to make reversible pants without have to turn them inside out or upside down or whatever. lol!!

You need to make 2 pairs of pants, do not complete the waist or leg hems.

Put the pants wrong sides together. So one right side is facing out and the other is facing in.

Do the elastic casing as the directions say, but instead of folding to the inside, fold to the outside.

Fold each hem on legs under 3/8"

Pin leg hems together (makes it easier to sew)
http://www.amitymama.com/vb/attachment.php?s=&postid=743092

Sew hem at 1/4" (sorry the picture is so hard to see)

Then all you have to do is put the elastic in and finish the casing. I would have pictures of them done but Iven is asleep and I can't remember his waist measurement so I can't finish it.

THANK YOU!! I've been dying to make the kids reversible pants but I was so lost on the turning and flipping, LOL.

The pictures totally made it click for me. Now all I have to do is wait for more $$ to buy some fabric. LOL. Oh, and some colder weather (It's been in the low 90's here).

Thanks for posting this Shalon. I've never tried reversible pants, but I might now ;)

I was wondering, do you have to fold the waist over? If I don't want the reversible side to show at the waistline, can I fold both sides toward themselves, hem and then do the elastic?

I know there are reversible pants directions out there that don't have the waist folded over. They are usually ones that require turining though.

I am sure there is someway that you can fold and hem without having to turn or have the reversible side showing, I just don't know what it is. I can play around today if you want me too. Iven still needs more pants. lol!

Thanks to everyone that posted here or PM'ed me to let me know that this sew a long did help them. :)

I just made Adrian a pair without turning the waist. It involved ironing though to make it easier. Also you might want to add an extra half inch to the top depending on the seam allowance/casing size the patternt you are using is.

I turned the tops under (the outer to the inside, the inner the same so the folded parts were touching) I pinned it and marked with pins where the raw edges met inside, then sewed around that to form a bottom (so the elastic isn't "free-floating" through the pants, KWIM), then I sewed around the top very close to the edge to leave a 1" casing, I left a bit open to stick in the elastic as normal then sewed that up. Does that make sense???? I am about to make another pair for a friend, I was going to use Shalon's casing method of folding over but I can do them this way if you'd like and take pictures if needed.

And I agree, this thread should be saved, I was getting confused form the other instructions before, lol! Visuals really help! Thanks Shalon!

that is how I was going to try and do it too. If you do the sew a long then I can keep making Iven's pants my way, which I love. Can't wait to see the pictures to make sure that I was going to do it right though.

Okay, i can post them in an hour or two, just waiting for the inner fabric to get done washing and then to dry.

After this though, i think I may use your method Shalon :D It looks much easier!

okay I have pics, they didn't turn out so well, I think my batteries are very low, I hope they help a little bit though with the visualization.
These pants are cream cord outer and woven inner that I dyed with watered-down cobalt blue and sea green.

Put the pants together like in Shalon's post.

First pic is the waist with the outer turned in and ironed down. I fold mine in a little more than an inch, I like to have the casing width be an inch to fit the elastic in easier.

Next with both pants turned in toward each other and ironed (the ironing helps me to keep the cord down straight, you can just pin it as you go instead)

http://www.amitymama.com/vb/attachment.php?s=&postid=743864

Here is what it should look like when you're done sewing the bottom part of what will become the casing.

rest in next post.......

Now you sew around the top of the casing very close to the edge, as close as you can and still catch both fabrics. Be sure to leave a hole to insert the elastic (shown in pic).

Pants all finished:

I think that is it, if I didn't explain it well, I'm sorry! Just tell me, sorry for the not-so-great-pics, I'm off to charge my batteries for the camera.

Thank-you Carrie! That's exactly what I was thinking, but it's very helpful to see pictures. I love those pants, btw. Thanks to both of you for taking the time to post pictures for us.

Oh, thank you so much -- I just got some fabric in a swap box that will make great reversible pants -- red cord and an animal print!

THANKS A BUNCH!!!

I have never made reversible pants before, but will try now. One question, do I need to use similar fabrics or can I use different types, say a flannel and a knit or microfleece? Thanks for your help.
