Neat  I was looking up wool felting on the net and found that you just need the wool felting needle and the spun wool right?? I am thinking of purchasing the supplies next time I order doll stuff.

For the balls you don't need any needles.. you just need wool batting for the inner ball and roving for the outer.. and some panty hose...

Someone posted this link a couple of weeks ago. I haven't actually done it myself but the directions sound pretty clear.

Thank you! The instructions are clear except I do not know what a hank is. I'm sure it's a really dumb question, but do you buy them in hanks or buy a big bundle and cut some off and that is a hank? I feel so dumb....

Those turned out great :) !
Felt balls are on my *long* list of things to do someday with ds. Maybe before the holidays we will try some, and give one to his friends. Did you put jingle bells inside?
Martha Stewart's website might also have some info on making the balls... I have her Kids magazine that has an article on Felting ~ they make the cutest little finger puppets too :) !

Here is a link to the Martha page on Felting :)
Martha Stewart Felt Balls (http://www.marthastewart.com/page.jhtml?type=content&id=channel172345&catid=cat253)
and another link I had saved for making felted eggs, chicks and soap. Also paperweights, which would make a nice gift I think... I was trying to think of a crafty things ds & I could do together for gifts.

Peppermint, what was difficult about the soaps? just wondering if you had any helpful hints :) If my first batch of cp soap turns out I might try felting some for gifts...

Heidi,
I am a newbie at this, but I'm pretty sure you buy the wool, and *then* you felt it. Felting makes it bind together. You can get the wool roving to make felted wool online, one source I have heard of is www.mielkesfarm.com/nz_corri.htm
or you can get it on eBay. I've only made a few animals from a packet I got from Magic Cabin. They came out "OK", but I'd like to try some other stuff. It took me a bit to figure it all out, my first animals look VERY primitive, LOL!

Would it make ya feel better to see my first attempt at some wool horses...this was 3yrs ago. They are so sad. LOL!

(they actually look better in this pic-freshly made-than they did after about an hour of being played with...then they were at their saddest)
They have improved with age. We still have one of them and I occasionally take a felting needle to it when I can't stand looking at it any more.

I feel like I'm missing something. The felt balls are beautiful, and the felted soaps look really neat, and like they would be kind of fun to try. What exactly is the point of felting soap, though? Don't you end up using up a great deal of the soap during the felting process? Does the felt dry well in between uses? And what happens when the soap is finished, or almost finished? Do you end up with a soggy hunk of felted wool?

That is what mine look like, LOL! I made little antlers on a horse body to make a deer, and he is now a "reindeer" on our nature table (I won't post a pic, LOL!). Then my mom & I made a Waldorf doll for DD, and spent Thanksgiving taking the dolls head off as the string that goes under her chin in front was sneaking up toward her mouth. We had to restuff her head AND her body as the wool was compacting - her pants kept falling down! *sigh*

hehehhe I will not show my first screw up.. He was sad.. Well as for the soap.. It is a neat idea but yes you use up a lot of soap doing it.. so hmm not reallly worth it in my honest opinion.
