I've been feeling rather stupid lately; I used to read so much for entertainment, now it's all parenting books! I really like The Narnia Books, and that other series by Lewis that has Perelandra, etc in it. Would I like the Hobbit? No, i've not seen the movie. :p Is it going to be too deep for my mommy-fried mind? Should I start back into reading for fun with something more simple, like Danielle Steel? (Just kidding, looking for the puking icon.)

You know, I used to push off Tolkien as being for the kids who played D&D during lunch hour, so it was only in the past couple of years (really, since the movie(s) came out) that I read both the trilogy and The Hobbit. They're both excellent, excellent works - particularly the LOTR, when you consider the statement Tolkien was making about war/society/the environment. But that doesn't mean you have to read them or view them too critically - I found them very entertaining. So, yep, please do read The Hobbit - it's well worth it. Good winter curl-up-in-bed book...

The Hobbit isn't deep, it's fun. And it's not too long. Lord of the Rings, now that is long! (It's a trilogy, and I got it in one volume. .. very heavy!)

Yes Yes Yes! I just love those books and the Hobbit is the easiest and lightest of them all, plus you sort of understand Bilbo, and his relationships with a few of the other Baggins in the end too... which in the trilogy is not explained well... (just like a lot of things IMO, but I still adored the books :) )

Yes, definately. I read the Hobbit when I was young & loved it. I reread it & the trilogy(1st time) while I was hanging out in the NICU last winter. The Hobbit is alot lighter than the trilogy, but I was totally into all of them. Tolkien was so ahead of his time!

It's been years since I read The Hobbit, but I remember enjoying it immensely.
