I want to make a nemo pinata like this one

for ds's bday- I am sure it would be lots cheaper than $16 to make one! Anyone know how to do the basic form of a pinata? I could go from there w/ the details of it- thank you!! ~H

Hmm,,blow up a balloon, cut out cardboard for the fins/tail, get some crepe(sp) paper, wrap it around the balloon & position the cardboard where it needs to be while doing this, let it sit over night or longer to dry, cut a small hole in the top of it & fill it up...

But my sons birthday is in a couple weeks and he wants a pinata SO bad, so we will be making one. And darnit, I was going to get the balloons today and I forgot!

I guess I better get started if it may need to dry for awhile.

I've made a pinata using this method, well almost. Blow up a large balloon. Make a thin paste using flour and water (or you can buy Mod Podge but it takes a lot of this) and tear up strips of newspaper or similar. Completely coat the strips in the paste mixture and drape over surface of balloon until completely covered and then some. Let it dry COMPLETELY. When dry cut a hole someplace for your opening and remove the balloon (if possible). Then decorate and fill. Keep in mind that this may not be as sturdy as a pinata that you would buy from a store. I usually do all of it, except the 'tail end' (the tie area) of the balloon. I leave that open to add my cardboard cutouts and candy.

You are better off to do it in layers. Do 1 layer and let it dry thoroughly overnight. Then add a second layer.
The best way to make a 'sturdy' piņata is to do 3 to 4 layers.
My kids LOVE to make piņatas... we make them all the time for everyone's birthday :LOL

Position the tails/fins with regular glue, let them dry AT LEAST overnight, or all day.

You can get crepe paper, or tissue paper, and cover with the different colors. I like cutting these in squares and pasting them on.

It cost a bit more but I like using the modpodge for the tissue/crepe paper, it looks much neater.

You will have to post a picture when you are done!
We make mostly butterflies (Big pain in the butt!) and soccer balls.

I made one for ds' birthday last year. I highly suggest using a disposable container to mix a water/flour paste in, it was nearly impossible to get it off! And you'll make a mess, mostly down your own arms. I did three layers, two newspaper, one Blue's Clues wrapping paper, letting each dry overnight. Oh, and the final layer I did with watered down white glue, it looked *really* good!!! I'd definitely do it again...

For my pastes, I mixed one part flour with 2 parts water, and 1 part water with 2 parts glue. Good luck!

Save yourself a huge headache/mess by buying a 2 dollar shower curtain at the dollar store.

Lay it on the table before you start.

Then when your done hose it down outside.
