Hi, I found a great, big wool rug at a yard sale but it smells like an old house, not pet odor or smoke, just musty.
Any suggestions on how to clean? It isn't really thick but it is big and heavy.
thanks

have you tried sprinkling it with cornstarch, baking soda or borax, letting it for like 30 minutes, then vacuuming?

What about a carpet freshener with citrus in it?

if that doesnt work, could you steam clean it with COLD water, no soap, see how that does, then if it is still musty, clean again with a little bit of a citrus soap?

if there is a place to hang it outside and air out without getting animals or too much sun on it, do that too.

Isn't it so much fun when you find somethng so cool at a yard sale??

I scored two small Oriental rugs for $3 each at a thrift store.
They were badly abused and reeked of must and most likely urine, but I just tossed them in my front loader and wahsed on cold, hung on the line, and a few month's later steam cleaned them.
They are not perfect, but they are nice enough to put on either side of my bed!
When I bought them I figured, well, if they don't clean up anymore than this, I can just use them for camping or as a door mat.
