I just read The Chosen, by Chaim Potok. It was really good. I love Amy Tan & Barbara Kingsolver.

Try "Death of Vishnu" by Manil Suri. WOW.

I love Janet Evanovitch (sp). She has a series of 9 books starting with One For the Money. Her characters are hysterical!!

Also, Clyde Egerton who wrote Rainy and Walking to Egypt.

The Color Purple by Alice Walker

It's not fiction, but one of my favorite authors is Torey Hayden. She is a teacher who works with severly disabled children specializing in elective mutism. She has a bunch of books which are riveting stories of her work in classrooms. She just works miracles and the books are wonderful!

Echo Heron is another of my favorites. She is an RN. Again, it's not fiction, but the books are excellent.

Patricia Cornwell is wonderfull, too. Her main character is Dr. Kay Scarpetta the chief medical examiner of Virginia. Body of Evidence is her first book.

Catherine Pelletier wrote at great series of books beginning with The Funeral Makers (I think that is the first one). It's set in Maine and is a riot.

Lee Smith is a wonderful southern fiction writer. I recommend any and all of her books.

I just reread To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Of course I read it in high school and have seen the play. I completely forgot about how interesting the book is.

You could try the Alexandria Quartet by Lawrence Durrell. Justine is the first book. LD tried to use Einstein's theories to write a book. He has three novels with three different perspectives, and then a fourth with time added- the fourth dimension.

They are set in Alexandria, Egypt, between the World Wars. He tries to cover every sort of love- platonic, personal, married, emotional, homosexual, transgendered, for pay, self- sacrificing, maternal, patriotic....take your pick.

The writing is very lush.

Janet Fitch from White Oleander tries this, and hers is a pale, miserable weenie imitation.

Right now I am reading a book called "Stella" about a blonde-haired, blue-eyed Jewish girl in the second world war. She apparently signed on with Hitler and became a person who searched for and turned in Jews during the war. The author is Peter Wyden.

Also, I just re-read One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. All these book we groaned about in high school are really, really good!! Who knew??
