gotta love that GA is one of the three states with min wage lower than the federal rate. SAD!

and i know chole said no childcare costs and no taxes taken out. when i mentioned feeling compassion for those living on min wage, i was thinking about the real situations...with taxes taken out and all of the real life things that would make living like that hard. and health ins...i mean, do min wage jobs usually pay health ins? i don't know. but i know the $600/month we pay for health ins is SO hard, and i understand, for the first time, how so many people are without it.

yeah, I couldn't include taxes since every state is different, although that would drastically change the income.

Also the "free childcare" makes the assumption that with 2 parents working full time, all children would be in state sponsored schools.

For my state, it's slightly higher (or will be in July). But still only about 2000. We could make it. We'd travel less and have fewer extras, but we'd be fine.
That's with your criteria. My childcare would be crazy expensive...

Our mortgage payment is very loooww.

We could make it within the parameters that you describe -- but I think that's largely because we've had a period of higher income to pay down debts and such. We don't have any car payments or cc payments currently which makes a huge difference -- but if we'd been living on min. wage all along I don't know if that would be the case, yk?

Makes me think of an episode of Morgan Spurlock's (the Super Size Me guy) show 30 Days where he and his wife live on minimum wage for a month. Here's a detailed review if anyone is interested.

I just heard the ad for that this afternoon. I might try to catch it if I can remember.

Call me a cynic but that review makes living on min. wage sound a lot worse than my experience has been. No it's not easy or particularly "fun" but I wonder if that isn't just cultural expectation of what life is supposed to be like. Is it supposed to be easy? Are we supposed to be able to buy what ever we want without planning , saving or bargain shopping? Are we supposed to pay for a taxi ride when walking would be free?

We could live on it, but not in our current house b/c the morgage would be too high (but if in a pinch I know my parents would help us out)... IF we had been earning min. wage we wouldn't have bought this house, so yes, we'd be able to live on it - life would be different than it is now though.

So, I'm voting on COULD we live not (not could we live on it and live at our current place) ($8/hr here)

eta- we have no cc bills or car debt - we live debt free except for the house.

Well dh makes a little bit more than that now but our housing and utilities are covered by the church. So we currently do ok but it is a stretch. We couldn't do it with out the housing for sure.

We would be making the same as what we do now. So yeah, we'd cover basics, which is what we do now. LOL. Things should change for us in the future eventually, but it's empowering to know you CAN do it, whether you want to or not.

We could not make it.

It would cover the mortgage and county taxes only.

Not the home insurance, food, utilities, anything else.
