Lilla has had thrush for about a month now She's been on nystatin but it's just not cutting it. Is there anything else I can try? I've heard about Genetian Violet, but does it really work? Where can I get it? None of my other kids have ever had thrush (I've never even had a yeast infection ~ knock on wood LOL), so I am really at a loss here.

I never used the nystatin, only the genetian violet, it killed the yeast in 1 application on the 2 occations my son got thrush.
no need to have a prescription but it is usually kept behind the counter.
The way we used it was to use a q-tip and liberally paint my nipples then nurse my son. This got the fluid into his mouth without battling the baby for an open mouth and treated me. 2 birds 1 q-tip
Hey there
Let me know if you want me to pick up some gentian violet for you! they sell it at the pharmacy in town..I'm headed there today as I think Ellery & I have the beginning stages of it. sore nipples and itchy breasts. No white spots anywhere yet..but just in case, I'm going to treat myself and her and give & take acidophilus
ps: I got the package from you! I owe you a $1...I'll do it next time I'm at paypal. Also you sent the wrong Carters sleeper...but tis okay!
cory, i could write a book on thrush, unfortunately... my dd had it a bunch of times during her first year.you can do a search on it here or on the web in general for lots of good info.
a few things--
--if she has it, you have it, too, even if you're asymptomatic for it.
--nystatin is mixed w/ a sugary substance to make it more palatable for the little ones, which is fine, but yeast thrives on sugar... nystatin is usually the doc's first line of defense, but from what i've heard, it rarely works.
--it may be "systemic"-- it was for me, which is why dd kept getting it back over and over again. it's a good idea, anyway, to incorporate probiotics into your and the baby's diet-- through yogurt w/ *live cultures* (it's gotta say that on the label) and thru acidophilus-- the good kind, which must be refrigerated.
--rainbow lights makes a food-based "candida cleanse" vitamin which you can take for a month to try to rid your system.
--use grapefruit seed extract, too, every day; e-mail branwyn or just do a search on gse on the boards to get more info re: dosage, etc.
--cut back or eliminate entirely the "baddies"-- white flour, all forms of sugar, simple carbs, even fruit, if you can't get rid of the yeast.
--the gentian violet will work to "push back" the yeast for now, but if it's systemic, which it may be if your dd has had it for a month, it will return.

1 bottle is likly enough for the two of you for a lifetime.
I did forget we always did the probiotics too, acidophalis and lactinix pills (also have to ask for them but no prescription needed) I took the probiotics and just assumed enough through nursing got to my son.
My grandmother reciently due to some serious surgical complications had a SERIOUS neither region yeast infection... not just vaginal but bottom and all the folds inbetween. Nystatan never touched it for MONTHS. This was while she was admitted to the hospital and nurses dried the area and did all the medical stuff and still never touched it.
1 application of gention violet knocked it out she did also start using a tea tree oil wash on her bottom and cloth pads instead of depends... are you using breast pads with PUL in them or plastic? switch to breastpads that are all cotton too
OOOOOH even better go topless, sun and air are some of the worst enemies of nipple thrush.
I would totally add the GSE to my regiment if I didnt already have the perfect thrush kit set up.
Just an FYI gention violet stains, your baby with have a purple mouth and your nips will be discolored for a day or so. Your babies drool will also stain so prepare. I personally found that Mama Salena's purple color matches gention violet perfectly so you can always send her anything that gets a stain and revamp it.
sutt and i have done the thrush boogie here since he was born...sigh.
lan and i did it as well-for almost 4mos and it nearly killed my bf psyche!
the only thing that worked for me and sutt a few mos ago was nystatin in an increased dose for him (not the dose usually given) and diflucan for me (a higher dose as well-followed by a second regimin of diflucan for me after finishing the first.
overall, we worked at getting rid of thrush for 3mos, and finally, this is what enabled us to kick it to the curb.
Nyastatin never worked for us either.
I agree with the PP - GV only helps to push the thrush back for now, but it is not a permanent solution.
If you are suffering from thrush, it sometimes takes a life style change to get rid of it. Cutting all sugar, white flour and such from your diet + add probiotics!!
I had been fighting thrush for a LONG time until I started a new treatment. COmplicated, but it works!!
This is what I have been doing and it has been working!!
1. GV twice a day (morning and evening) on the nipples and baby's mouth
2. Rinsing the nipples after EVERY feeding with a mixture of 1 part water + 1/3 part vinager
3. Then putting some Grapefruit Seed Extract mixed with water in a cotton ball and applying it to the nipples (NEVER put it in baby's mouth because is AWFULLY bitter!!).Don't put GPS extraxt on the nipple on the times you use GV.
4. Applying a VERY sparse amount of Lotramin fungi cream on the nipples
5. Changing the nursing pads after every feeding.
6. Letting the nipples air dry and go braless as much as possible
7. Get some sun light on the nipples - it kills the yeast.
8. Take 6 capsules of odorless Garlic supplements every day
9. Taking 6 capsules of Acidophilus and Bifidus pills every day
Thank you all for your replies. Now, get this. . . Right before I posted, I SAW the thrush in her mouth, like I said, she's had it for a month and I physically SAW it this AM. So, before I go to pick up the boys I pop on here to read the replies and then go & pick up some gentian violet ~ $11.01 at Walgreens!!!! Come home and I'm about to put it on her and I can NO LONGER SEE IT!!!!!!!! WTH is that?!?!?!?! Should I put it on JIC? LOL This is really weirding me out!!!!
Now, here's something else a little strange. . .I said that I've never had a yeast infection and never had it on my boobs, either. BUT right around the time she got the thrush, I devoloped eczema for the first time EVER. And, it was/is on my boobs?!?!?!?!? Is there any chance that the 2 can be related or did my Dr mis-diagnose and the eczema is really thrush???? I'm so confused by all this LOL
Now, Erica ~ thank you Don't worry about the $1 LOL I'm sorry I sent you the wrong sleeper And, sadly, there's nothing I can do as someone else bought everything. I can, however, refund you if you'd prefer. LMK
Thrush is a very nasty evil little thing - even though you think you can't see it, it might still be there. I seem to remember that it takes about 3 hours after you treat an area before the yeast returns, but I am not sure...
So I would treat your baby's mouth even though you cannot see the thrush anymore.
I had NEVER EVER had thrush before in my life - of any kind - until I had DS#2 (and I nursed 2 babies before). But when it came it felt itchy, looked scaley and the milk let down began feeling painful. It got gradually worse until the pain was unbearable and I finally went to the Dr. They prescribed Nyastain, but as I said before it never worked.
The Pat Gima's Thrush treatment plan is the only thing that is helping
Just a side note, GV tastes horrible too. And although it may help in for a short time, it can make a babies mouth and mama's nipples very sore and irritated if used too long or too much.

Yes you should paint your nips and have her nurse and treat her JIC
yes doctors are only human and fully capible of making a mistake or mis diagnosis.

I agree! Nystatin never worked for us. I think all the sugar in it made it worse! Best wishes!
