If you have a 2nd grader or had one recently...

Would you mind posting what they are doing? Marlie is really struggling with getting through her work on a regular basis. She's a huge time waster, so I think that is a lot of the problem. She also gets very easily distracted by the noise a toddler brother makes LOL. But I'd like to compare what we are doing with what other 2nd graders are doing.

She has a full day of classes Monday, so we only do school 4 days a week T-F.
Here's what I have her doing;

English (and writing, Bob Jones)
Horizons Math
Spelling
Cursive Handwriting
Maps Charts and Graphs
10 minutes of Spelling City and 10 min of math facts on Math U See website
Explode the Code book 4
15 minutes of silent reading on her own
15 minutes of reading to me
Science with me 2 afternoons a week for about 1/2 hour

Looks like about what my 2nd grader is doing.

Here is her schedule:

Easy Grammar
Singapore Math
Sonday Phonics and Spelling
Read Aloud- around 15 minutes
Silent Reading and then bookadventure.com quiz (around 15 also)
Timez Attack
Typing Program
Art twice a week
Science twice a week
History twice a week

My 2nd grader loves school and stays focused very well. That is not the case with my 4/5th grader. Totally the opposite. Ugghh...

Our 2nd grader is pretty easily distractible, too.
We do:
Easy Grammar
Primary Language Lessons (I usually split up lessons that involve writing because it takes FOR.EVER. So if a lesson has 12 sentences, I might split it up over 3 days)
Math-U-See Alpha
Science and Geography with me and his older sister (3rd grade; we are doing My Father's World)
Spelling by Sound and Structure
Bible (all together)
Reading (on his own; he reads on a 5th grade level and gets too impatient with reading aloud)
Piano lesson 1x a week
Art lesson 1x a week if I get around to it

It appears we're slackers.

My 2nd grader (7 yrs old) does Teaching Textbooks math, HWT, and lots of reading.

We do science as a family occasionally (we do Physics Quest each year and occasional themed units), and he is casually completing HOTW 2 when he gets the urge.

He's not entirely neurotypical, though, and has a wide range of academic ability. ((His TT is grade 5, his reading ability and comprehension are at post-grad levels, but we try to keep him reading things in the YA or lower range because he doesn't have the social/emotional ability to process more adult material))

E is in 2nd and here is what we do

Missions/bible study together as a family 30 minutes

finishing up OPG for phonics
read aloud with me 10-15 minutes
ETC (2 pages per day)
Italic 1 page per day
MUS lesson each day (and we need to do the math review on the website, thanks for mentioning that)
FLL 3 days a week
Science and Geo as a family (using MFW and WP combo for these)
Daily read aloud with Dad

After the first of the year we are adding in

Spelling Power 10 minutes
15 minutes of book basket time

We are doing a modified workbox system and it really helps with the boys doing their work more independently. I love that it takes the pressure off of me to nag them to finish their work.

We're using all Bob Jones and we also do 4 days of school a week - but we do 5 lessons in those 4 days (try to double up on one hard subject or two easy subjects a day). So that means:

Arithmetic (actually, we're using ABeka math)
English
Handwriting
Reading
Spelling
History

Science is done a couple of times a week on days that we can get it in. If we're running behind, I make sure we get math, english and reading done. The rest I can make up on the weekend or whatever but if we get behind in these subjects, it's terrible.

It looks like most of the 2nd graders are doing about the same work load. So I think she just needs to buck up and get busy, LOL. She has her entire week laid out for her on our family clipboard, so there's no mistaking what she has to do. She just wastes time. Today I told her to finish spelling city and math facts so we could go outside for 20 min and ride bikes. She finished really quick, and actually did a good job (not a sloppy finish KIWM?). Maybe some external motivation is in order.

Our boys know that they have to finish certain things (like school and some chores) before we do fun stuff (like tv, computer, playing outside, going somewhere with mom or dad) so they are pretty good about finishing up early rather than late. They only have to stay in once or twice until they figure out that finishing is better than wasting time.

Caroline would be 1st grade in public, but she calls herself 2nd grade. Also, she is doing the same work as Joseph, who is 9 and doing 5th grade work.

We do Moving Beyond the Page Social Studies/Science and Literature daily. The literature involves reading 2 chapters a day (typically) they are reading The Cay right now, answering questions daily, various projects, lots of research and a lot of writing. They have done several 3 paragraph papers this semester.
She does HWOT, 1 page per day.
Algebra for 2nd grade , a few pages per day.

I will say that I am very involved in what they are doing. MBTP 9-11 is laid out so that it is self-directed, but for Caroline I am very involved in going over the instructions with her and encouraging her on assignments.
I don't think she would do well with giving her a week's worth of assignments at a time.

my dd is 2nd grade as well ~ we are pretty relaxed though & if we don't do "school" one day.. oh well, we get to it eventually.

her extra curric ( P.E.) take up a bit of time:
tues, th & sat ~ gym 3 hrs each day, private 1 hr fridays. swimming on sat., guitar (music) on mondays. also goes to a co-op book club on friday eves.

curric

history ~ SOTW 1-2x a week
science ~ noeo science 1-2x a week usually an experiment

math ( spectrum math workbook 1-3 pages daily)
L.A/ reading ~ daily.. 1 lesson in even moor reading & understand stories & activites, also she picks out 1 book and read it each day.

spelling ~ 3-4x a week i have a workbook,or will have her pick words she wants to know & we make our own spelling lists.

those are the main things, we work in art etc... i find she does better @ the table alone, so older ds is already finished, and younger ds is out of the room.

My daughter will be 9 in December. She just started to get reading. I suspect some dyslexia. Now that she is starting to get it she does not get upset at working on it. Before that we did a lot of reading together. It seems whatever it is connected to everything else she does. We get the package deal.

We have the same rules. The boys never had any problem keeping up, she's just different. Much slower and more distractable. She always manages to finish, but it shouldn't take her until 3:00 KWIM?

It's just her weekly schedule. She only has to do Monday's work on Monday, Tuesdays work Tuesday etc...

This is what Brianna is currently doing and she is going to be 8 in a month. She's 2nd grade, missed the cutoff b/c of her birthday, so she's an older 2nd grader I guess (LOL)

*Bob Jones English, Reading & Math-1 lesson a day
*Spelling Workout Daily
*Starting Explode the Code 6 tomorrow, does that daily
*We are doing a state study this year so she's doing almost what her 5th *grade brother is doing and we do that probably 3 times a week.
*Apologia Science-Swiming Creatures-3-4 times a week and we do the lapbook that goes with it.
*20 minutes of reading on her own a day, but she does far more than that of her own choice.
*Last year I had them doing some daily writing and we haven't been doing that yet this year. We moved right at the beginning of our year, so we actually just started about the 2nd week of October. That will be added in the next week or 2. Just having her write a few sentences, doing story starter type things.

I think that's about it. She can do fairly well about getting her work do or take all day. I noticed last year she was horrible to even get out of bed and then all of a sudden she was waking up at 6:30/7:00 in the morning on her own. Now if she knows the neighborhood kids or getting home soon or that we are going somewhere and she'll have to get work done when we get home she can actually do her work better than my 5th grader (LOL)

** When I was having trouble with her last week I did print the entire weeks schedule out from Homeschool Tracker and gave it to her on Monday's. I told her this is what you have due to me before the following Monday. You can get it to me by Friday and if not you will work on it Saturday and if not Saturday then when we get home from Church on Sunday you will still work on it. I tell you that happened a few times, but I think it helped. She almost missed a party one time. She was literally doing math problems right up until arriving at the party, but we haven't had trouble since.

I couldn't give any of mine a full day's worth of assignments without expecting a breakdown because of having so much to do.
That's great that she can handle that.
