Have you read any homeschooling books yet? The first ones I read were The Unschooling Handbook, Homeschooling Step-by-Step, and Homeschooling: A Patchwork of Days.

It really depends on your general homeschooling philosophy...I'm more in the unschoolers' camp. My son is 4 1/2, and he's showing an interest in learning to read, so some days he does a few lessons in Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons, he does a lot of writing letters, etc. Some days he just plays all day, which is fine by me. If he did not show interest in learning letters and reading, I would not be pushing the issue.

Some parents are more in the "School at home" camp, where they use a curriculum and have specific hours that they do "school."

I think most parents are between the two extremes on the continuum. See if you can figure out what works for you and your son, and remember that you can always change what you're doing once it stops working!

One other thing you need to make sure to do is check out the laws in your state. Some states require you to do more than others...most require at least a notification to the school board that you will be homeschooling. Some require yearly evaluations, some require standardized testing at certain ages. I don't know if any states start at age 5 with requirements...I think most are between ages 6 and 8, so you might have a year or more before you need to worry about it.

Michelle had some great ideas. I also liked the book "patchwork of days," it was very helpful.

What level would you say your child is at? Does your child know their letters and recognize all of them? This will be helpful in pointing in the right direction in books we like and use.

I am reading a book called "Homeschooling and the Voyage of Self-Discovery"

by David H. Albert.

Definately read all the homeschooling books your local library has! Don't forget to inter-library loan any they don't have since you can do this for free. My county's library is on-line so I can look at books on Amazon.com and then request them at my local library through inter-library loan! Only one book in the 5 years I've been at my current address my local library was unable to get for me for free!

Best wishes on your information seeking journey!

Sincerely,
Debra, homeschooling mother of four
