Janae has been begging for some "school" since the beginning of the year (her brother is Kindergarten) She's recognizing some sight words and is learning letter sounds and really, really wants to learn to read.
I just odered the book, is it approriate for a 4yo, though?

It depends on the kid. If they're already learning letter sounds it should be fine. I'd be inclined to take it slower than I would with an older child depending on comprehension. I also would maybe avoid the writing part of each lesson. I started dd on it when she was 4 and we were both miserable. ds started at just 5 and is zooming through it, but I think that's due to child not age.

We did it at 4 without doing the writing. She was picking it up, but her lack of attention span was frustrating for both of us, so we stopped. Simone was 20 months or so at the time and she was picking up the sounds also.

I think it would be just fine considering she is asking to be taught that does make a big difference, but i also think you should give the handwriting part a chance and see how she does with it, if it frustrates you both than stop, but always push one step ahead and see how far you can really go.
Here is a great site for worksheets to go along with it, I use them everyday and it is so nice to have them.
We started at 4.5 and finished at 6! We took it easy and did it as he was ready for it. There were times when we put it aside for a few months. I remember when I first got the book thinking...wow, in 100 days he'll be reading at 2nd grade level.

Geez that sounds so familiar, I bought the book when he was 2.5 because I wanted to have it ready when he was and I ended up loaning it to a friend and got it back when he was like 4 or 4.5, now he is 6 and I am only on lesson 25 because we do more unschooling, than actual school work so the days we are gone or really busy we end up skipping and what not. But on a good note, he was already evaluated and she was more than pleased with what he knows. If I really buckled down we could be reading in the next 75 days, but he is ready for that now, before he wasn't.
I was using it with an older child but my 2 1/2 yr old insists on being held while we do it. I swear the other day during the part where the child sounds out the words I pointed to a word & my 2 1/2 yr old said the word before the older child could say it!
Totally freaked me out! LOL I really like this book - It really works (for the child it was intended for I mean! LOL).
Hmm..I was going to ask the same thing. Molly is 4 and I think she might be interested. She started writing her name Mol or sometimes Mlo. I did not teach her that. Not that I know of anyway. She also can draw a Z. She has a preschool book that like her brother and workbooks will go through several pages at one time.
