She did finally settle in after about a month of trying. The issues that made us decide to pull her out were numerous.
She would come home and say she didn't get time to do X because the other kids were doing it. She didn't get a chance to do X because the another kid broke something and the teacher had to fix it. They didn't do X because someone had an "accident" and they had to deal with that. She was bringing papers home that had a picture to color on the front (which she was coloring) and then the teacher was having them flip the paper over, trace the picture on the back and color it again because they weren't ready to move on to something else.
These things just made me feel like she was doing more sitting around and waiting rather than learning. Also, her class size went from 18 to 25. That's an awful lot of kids in K-5.
Also, she started coming home with major attitude issues. I spent most of my afternoons trying iron out her attitude that she picked up at school rather than spending time *with* her. There were some "troublesome" kids in her class and she was starting to mimic their behavior at home, not at school. I spoke with her teacher a few weeks ago and described what she was doing. She said she didn't any of that behavior in Sabreena at school but there were two or three kids in class who behaved that way.
And another thing! LOL I realized that the time I was spending with Sabreena was rushed, chaotic and just plain unhappy. The mornings were full of "You NEED to get ready, we have to go!", "Sabreena, hurry up and get your stuff together, it's time to leave" (no matter how early we got up to prepare) and the afternoons were nothing but dealing with meltdowns and attitude.

Wow~ You just described my dd to a T when she was in p.s.
She sounds a lot like Ara. That is one reason we homeschool. She gloms onto the most obnoxious girl child she can find - usually the one with the snottiest attitude - and emulates. We already wrestle with respect issues, I don't want to add more.

Katie is like that too! But luckily this year, the kids in her class are super sweet. Perhaps because a lot of them have or used to have developmental delays of one kind or another, they're fairly oblivious to usual pop culture stuff that her public K was full of (and I pulled her out of).
I hung out with them a few weeks ago at the Science Center and they are the some of the coolest kids I have ever met. I have to say that class size, and the particular kids, seem to make a big difference. Last year was *just* like what you describe, Marion. Total snarky attitude all afternoon. This year (while I still have my issues with school in general and with her class), we don't have that. It is such a difference!
Oh, and congrats on homeschooling!! I'm a reluctant schooler at the moment, LOL. I hang out here because I can't wait to pull my kids out. ROFL...it's a long story, but for now, they are in.
