I just found out the curricula that they'll be using in Katie's first grade class.

(Side note, I love her teacher, she is calm, smart, and sweet...yay!)

They are using CEI, which is computer-based?, for math and reading.

Supplementing with Saxon Math, Saxon Phonics and Spelling, Reading Mastery, My Reading and Writing Journals...

Science = Real Science

Social Studies = Story Path

Just looking for info and feedback. The science and social studies look awesome and hands-on.

She is one of 12 kids, 7 girls, 5 boys, and she will have one lead teacher, a co-teacher who is a first-year, and two teaching assistants. !!! That is a lot of teachers.

We used Saxon math in our homeschool.
My girls LOVED it!
My son HATED it!
The charter school my kids are in is also using saxon this year.
Good for my dd, bad for my son.
He was doing first grade singapore math and is now in K doing K saxon math.
I am not sure how he is going to handle it.
He is already complaining about hating school! Sidetrack, sorry!
I am not sure how the saxon homeschool/saxon school differs.
I know the saxon homeschool K does not have any workbooks.

I think saxon math would be more fun in a school setting.
It is heavy on using manipulatives, taking surveys (for graphing), and very repetitive.
I think it is a really good, solid math program.
I am hoping it will be more interesting in school and appeal to my ds!

Wow! Small classes!
My dd has 27 kids in her homeroom!
She told me some kids were sitting on the floor in some classes because there were too many kids.

I am not familiar with the other curriculums.

Thanks Hope. We'll just have to see, then. Katie loves manipulatives so hopefully it will work for her. She hates repetition though.

And yeah, small classes. Because half the kids in each class are on the autism spectrum, they have a very low ratio of students to teachers.

I use Saxon math.
It tends to repeated the learned skills many times over in a lesson along with the new skills. I agree either they like it or they hate it.

I also do not do the 100 problem timed drills. If we do them at all along with the lesson I ask for 20 problems.

I like it because if they wanted the kids could do the lesson on their own.

We use Saxon and have been pleased. I'm impressed with the school's curricula.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm impressed too, Adria. I visited for open house yesterday and it was very good. The classroom is very nicely set up. I'm optimistic. Katie is very excited. Oh, excuse me, she is going by Catherine now.
