Thank you so much to those of you who recommended Spelling Power. It is the perfect program for Reid. I've always thought he was a pretty good speller, but he absolutely hated traditional spelling units/lessons. Spelling Power is perfect for him because it rewards him for the words he already knows. No more struggling over spelling, we do it, it doesn't take long, and he feels good about it. What a relief!!!
My 10 year old is doing it for the summer, too. He goes to ps. He's zooming through Level I. He wants to be in the spelling bee next year and I think this will really help him.

did you manage with just the book or did you get the activity cards etc. thanks again.
If you're wanting it brand-new, there is no "cheap" way to go. The dealers can't offer "sales" on the items. What they can do is offer free shipping however, and sometimes a free student-record book too.
I ordered the Spelling Power manual, Activity Cards, and a student Book from a lady in Florida. I was following a few EBAY auctions, but 98% of those were new items, from dealers like her (which is how I found her, btw) and they can't offer "deals" other than I described above. If you find an auction used, you can save a little bit of money... there are a couple of used Task-Card sets on EBAY at the moment. Otherwise, I found none used anywhere homeschool wise on the net.

Barbara - We just got the book and it's been fine. I've been using it with my 8 and 10 year old sons, but my 5 year old wants to do it, too. He seems to be one of those 'natural' spellers so I can't decide if we should start with him or just let him spell on his own. I think the book recommends not starting before age 8, but there are lots of younger children who use Spelling Power, including Wendy's girls.
I believe I got mine on the Sonlight forums - I posted an ad in the WTB forum. You might check vegsource, too.
I received my Spelling Power manual and task cards in the mail today.... WOW WOW WOW What a comprehensive program!!!
I now feel like I'm in a teaching-learning-curve reading my section of the manual... going over how to start the program, what to use test wise, etc., etc., etc. I've never seen a program like this!!! And I really think that once I get the overall "view" of the program fully solidified in my own mind, that I should be able to really use this program to its fullest potential with my son... and best of all, I think he'll come out of this a much better speller as well as reader too.

That is NOT the same Spelling-Power program that we are discussing.
You need at least the manual ($49.95) and a student record book ($5.95). If you have the money then I would recommend the Task Cards as well ($29.95 ) I'm so glad I ordered them too -- gives you tons of extra ideas, games, activities tied into the program.
I ordered from this company in FLA and she gave me free-shipping -- she was great to deal with too:
