Anyone have a kid go through surgery?

We are just back from an appt. with a surgeon. My 3yo dd has a little soft lump on her throat that has been diagnosed as a thyroglossal cyst (a little tube from tongue to thyroid gland -- leftover from fetal development; they usually close up --that gets filled up with mucus and can become infected grow or cause other problems later in life). Seems like it will need to come out. It's a *minor* surgery done on an outpatient basis...

I am VERY scared about the whole idea of surgery -- never had one of my own and worry a great deal about anesthesia for my baby. Hoping someone has btdt and has words of wisdom. Thanks

DS had suregery when he was 2. I hope you are able to use a children's hospital. The only really awful part of thw surgery was when DS was in recovery. He just seemed to have a dreadful time coming out of the anesthesia. Try to have a support person there for you just in case. It was me and DH and that was enough. But I would have hated to have felt alone with my child seeming so foreign. nak, so I'll stop.

My oldest had surgery when he was just 5 weeks old. It was inpatient for pyloric stenosis. The surgery itself was very fast (about 20 min). His recovery seemed fine as well. Of course this was 9 yrs ago - my memories could have faded.

My DD has surgery at 2 days of age (I didn't know of the birth defect, until after she was born). It wasn't a minor surgery and took about 2 hours (if my memory serves me right). She was born with an ileum atresia and had to have her intestines cut and then sewn back together.

I just want to offer you As I know how scary and difficult it is to have a child go through surgery.

My oldest son had two surgeries last year. One was to put in a shunt and the other one was because of his accident. he still may have one last surgery to replace a piece of his skull.

Have someone there with you while you wait. Get some rest if you can. It does get better.

love and blessings
