Wow, maybe it is the age. Dd2 is nearly exactly the same age, and she just last week started throwing herself face-down on the ground whenever something doesn't go her way. Throws herself down and screams. So that's one perspective.
My other experience is with ds who has a temper from the time he started to try to roll over and couldn't quite. He would scream when he couldn't roll over, then scream when he did roll over and couldn't quite roll back. He would shriek if you touched a toy he dropped even though all you wanted to do was return it. Now, he was otherwise a very calm, never-cries child. To some extent I just let him deal with it, but I definitely gathered him in my arms to try to calm the storm. Sometimes that helped; sometimes he struggled and just screamed louder. (What he wanted was success!)
Anyways, I hope this makes you feel a bit less alone, and in a nutshell, my advice is to gather him up and hold him, or leave well enough alone if it seems to make it pass faster. Good luck.
