Ugh...mastitis...

Sooo, we were supposed to go to a wedding on Saturday afternoon/night. We decided we would go on Saturday, then we'd be staying the night on Saturday and coming home Sunday.

The weather forecast for Saturday night/Sunday looked a bit scary, so we decided to leave on Friday night and come home Saturday after a brief appearance at the reception. We got to my parents' house about 11:00 pm and went to bed between midnight and 1:00. I felt perfectly fine.

In the morning, I woke up and noticed it felt like I probably had a plugged duct. I figured if the girls nursed really well, I'd be fine. They nursed, and I got up and then within probably 20 minutes started feeling absolutely horrible. I had horrible chills and was aching all over, nauseous, etc. COMPLETELY knocked on my arse.

DH drove to the closest healthfood store (about 45 miles away--my folks live in the boonies), and as they were headed there, I realized that I should probably get some antibiotics in case my usual homeopathy didn't work. So, after about 10 strenuous (LOL) phone calls, I finally had a script called into a pharmacy near where DH and my Dad were.

I said that apparently we weren't meant to go to this wedding, and when we didn't take the hint from the weather forecast, I got sick...We came home late Saturday afternoon, making a pitstop at my in-laws about 2/3's of the way home (just in time for more Belladonna and Tylenol for me). I know fever is good, and I hated to take the Tylenol, but I could not even function when I was not taking it. I didn't take more Tyelenol after that, and my fever was low enough that I wasn't shivering like crazy. I slept most of the day (or tried to sleep most of the day--as much as a mama of a 6 week old with 3 other children bouncing around the house including a needy three year old that Daddy couldn't quite manage to keep out of the bedroom), and I'm feeling significantly better today. I'm still not totally better, and my chest is still somewhat inflamed, but not nearly as bad as yesterday, so I'm getting there.

I was simply amazed at how hard and fast it hit me!!!!

Mastitis sucks, take it easy, Mama!!! Don't forget to alternate hot/cold compresses, too.

WOW... we are connected or something. I did the same thing, the same day. We planned to have this great date with me and dh because the kids were going to a play with my dad and his gf and then spending the night down there with them.

Well needless to say, I ended up with horrible chills and feeling terrible, and I worked the duct out in the shower and that just made everything worse. I did take some Soy Lethicin (are you still doing that? I didn't have even as much as a clogged duct when I was taking it... and I have some new info as well if you want it) some Probiotics and some Tylenol and going to bed. We did get a bit of a fun night, but Sunday was horrible. I slept most of the day. I am just glad it hit over the weekend. I couldn't imagine functioning like that during the week with Don gone. OMG.

Today my breast is sore/bruised but I feel so much better! And Logan has been a champ nurser... I just have started him on that side every time and he has really helpped work it out for me.

Gosh, mastitus sucks! {{{hugs}}} Jody!

oh, I just had mastitis 2 weeks ago. It was awful! We all had a stomach bug and so the kids weren't nursing enough and my immune system was down. It knocked me flat too! I had to do tylenol too, if I didn't I was shaking uncontrollably! I have never been so sick! I couldn't get abx, so I did colloidal silver, super dose echinacea and super dose vit C. I was able to knock it out in about 36 hours. It hit fast like yours, no warning at all!

With my dd I would get it whenever I was stressed. That is, I was a student at the time, and if I had a big assignment due or exam or anything, I'd start feeling fluey, the red marks would start creeping across my breast, all that. I figured that if I did both working out and studying on the same day, I'd start getting it. It's awful! But I was able to know when I was doing too much.

Like it or not, bf is a delicate time - it might last for years, but your body's still doing something so strenuous. Take it easy!

I just got a book on herbs and nursing. It has a lot of good info in it. I have only skimmed through it. It recommends 1200mg of lethicin up to 3 times a day! I was taking 1200 a day (still am), but is it coincidence that I did not take it the night before I got sick?! I'm also wondering if I should take more.

Usually, I see this coming, and I take homeopathic byronia if there aren't red streaks, and belladonna if there are. That usually does the job. Since it hit so hard and I was shaking like crazy and felt so badly, I pretty much panicked and felt like I'd better get antibiotics.
