I may not be much help b/c I gently weaned Owen when I was about 5mos pg. The soreness went away about the end of the first tri. for me, but my supply went down so far that he was working a dry well, so to speak. That wasn't exactly comfortable either. He was already night weaned by that point. I just made it a point to tell him that we could nurse at home when he wanted, but not when we were out. Then I gradually got to the point where we were out all day. Though he really loved his "meela" it wasn't really upsetting at all for him, I think he was basically ready, just nursing out of habit and for a good snuggle.
Anyway, that's my ramble.
