Physically, I recommend pumping no more than 1 oz per side or just enough to relieve pain/pressure. If you plan to continue offering, consider pumping at least occationally until you're sure he's done.
Crisp, green cabbage leaves can be very helpful as suggested. I would refrain from using them until you're sure he's no longer interested in nursing.
Emotionally, I have no advice. It's tough on the heart that's for sure. Consider this however, instead of focusing on the "end", think of all the wonder times you've had nursing him....stroking his hair, kissing his forehead, etc.
