I'm one that thinks we see what the politicians want us to see. Whether or not he actually is what you see is something that will have to be determined. Unless any of us have spent days, weeks, months, seeing them on a personal basis, at home, at work, in other aspects of their life, we can't be sure they are any of the things we think they are from tv.
I think this way about all of the candidates. While I did pick one to vote for, I didn't stand so strongly behind them because I know that I really don't know them, or anything about the person they really are. So while I'll happily watch the election, I won't be cheering or jumping for joy when one wins, whether it is the candidate I picked or not.
It seems odd to me to see so many people so adamantly for someone they may never have met and barely know. I don't understand the tears and excitement everyone seems to have right now.
I mean no snark or offense by asking. I just don't understand the huge hype.

I agree with this. charisma is one thing - understanding his views are another.

I would never vote based on race - i don't care if the person running is purple with polka-dots.

but that's a different thread. Just trying to wrap my brain around this whole thing.

you are not alone. i'm also frightened.

I'm petrified about how he's going to deal with foreign powers. In particular, how he's going to deal with the Middle East. What happens there is going to affect us. i am truly scared.
I'm also very concerned about his views on keeping our country safe - but that rolls back into the above.
Lastly, i want to be excited too - like everyone else, I'm well aware that we have made history tonight by electing an African-American into the presidency. That makes me very excited about being where we are today. however, i didn't vote based on color - and he was not my choice.
I sincerely hope that President-elect Obama lives up to everyone's hopes and dreams and makes this the best presidential term ever with outstanding results.
